Citrus in Z 6?
Comments (9)No, citrus can not be wintered in a dark garage. They need the right combination of potting soil, fertilizer, watering, temperature, and light. Many struggle to find that combination. Then there are the pests; aphids, scale, and spider mites can be problems inside and out. They do great in my greenhouse. Pretty easy to grow with only aphids and mites to fight. I had scale at one time but completely eradicated them and things have been pretty easy since. I do have the right spider mite control, organic isn't easy for them. Comments (3)I happened to come across the post in a google search and just had to say -- how cool! My mother has a calamondin she received as a houseplant while recovering from surgery 10-12 years ago. It's now over 5' tall, and a good 3 1/2' around -- it takes two people to bring it indoors to its winter home! (She lives in southern Ohio) It always seems to have both fruit and flowers on it, and she has harvested over 200 ripe fruit at a time. When I was home a few weeks ago, I picked a lot of fruit which I processed and put in baggies in the freezer, for calamondin cakes in the future. She says the tree needs picking again, so the next time I visit I'm going to pick enough to try calamondin marmelade. Your fruit looks beautiful, and I'm sure you'll enjoy the tree for years to come!...See MoreWho grows calamondin orange?
Comments (31)It always surprises me that people haven't had it before. The most common brand I see is Tajin but there are many brands sold in Hispanic grocers as well as Trader Joes even has a knock off of it now. Its really tasty sprinkled on fresh fruit and I won't enjoy jicama without it or being pickled, cucumbers are also fantastic with it. Its common to see at fair's with vendors selling cups of fruit and having different brands of seasoning to sprinkle on top. I haven't had it on a caramel apple but I bet it would be delicious. I always stalk the ethnic aisle at the store but they rarely have it, so I have to make my way to a Hispanic mart and pick some up, along with an assortment of chilies and Oaxaca cheese. I love salt so it doesn't bother me, the strongest flavor is the chili. It looks like they even sell a low sodium variety too. and while googling the website it looks like its sold at target, so that's convenient....See MoreCalamondin and Meyer update :)
Comments (7)Thanks everyone! George, will do! I'll add a feeding of AS this week! Susanne, that was my thinking, as that is a full sun from sun up to sun down location, no shade at all! And Laura, I just hunted for and bookmarked your calamondin cake recipe! Even added the Trader Joe cake mix to my shopping list! Also, when should I start easing off on the fertilizer? I think when I was first asking for advice, I was told to fertilize till September, do I recall correctly? KC...See Morednedd1 zone7 LI NY
