Bottlebrush, brick walls, and Tipuana, oh my!
Comments (7)Get the Sunset Western Garden book, Mary Irish's "Gardening in the Desert Southwest", and Judy Mielke's "Native plants for southwestern landscapes". When you get here, make a trip to the Desert Botanic Gardens, with a camera, and shoot what grows. www.desert-tropicals.com is an excellent resource, as are the various city water departments for plant lises. Mountain States Wholesale nursery (www.mswn.com) has a great online plant catalog. Instead of Tipu, think Arizona Yellow Bells or Desert Willow. It's almost impossible to get ANYTHING started between mid-april and mid-July. If you wait until the summer rains start, it gets easier, and October is best for almost everything. Hot-weather growers, like bougainvilla, are best started in mid to late March. Spend a bit of time getting to know your house and PLANNING what to plant. I have a blog with landscape advice - I'm a certified deseret landscaper, trained by the Desert Botanical Gardens. YOu might find the advice useful. Comments (14)If you had more appropriately sized shutters they would look better. They are too narrow. White ones. Or deep brown. They need to contrast with the brick. Limb up that tree. It’s a nice tree but it’s hanging too low. (Actually, limb up BOTH trees.) Remove the bushes in front of the sidewalk (to the right of the door) and replace with a really low groundcover. The bushes on the other side of the door look great. I can’t tell - is that a ramp? Are railings required near the door? And do you have room for a BIG pot of flowers by the door? Overall, the house looks very neat and well kept. The grass is nice....See MoreShutters, and Siding, and Brick, oh my...needs revitalizing!
Comments (17)What colors do you see when you enter your home. The inside and outside should speak the same language. Minimally I would paint the shutters white to help balance the white around the door. It feels unbalanced with the large white door frame and just skinny pieces of white elsewhere. If you are happy with the color of the outside I would probably still pick a lighter color for the brick - just about 2 shades lighter to give some visual interest. Use the same color as the brick for the garage door. Pick a color from your interior space for the front door if it works with the outside color. If you want to repaint the brick and siding I would choose the same/similar neutral that you have on the inside to paint the outside and still pick a color from your interior to paint the door....See MoreJust painted my brick house Shoji white.
Comments (15)As a new owner of a red brick house, I love the shoji white, I hope to whitewash mine down the road. It's a great looking house, I vote no shutters. I think a wider curving walk and layered planting beds on each side will showcase the beautiful front porch. Of Jilly's ideas, I like the 4th door color. Jilly do you know the color name?...See Moregroveraxle
