WT? HD ad in the middle of thread list?
Comments (62)Clinresga, you have a weird idea about the purpose of advertising. Advertising is a way for providers of goods and services to inform the public about what they offer, thereby encouraging them to become customers. Some products (e.g. Spanx) require no advertising. For the rest, getting the word out to the people who are most likely to become customers is really important. The best ads are appealing and interesting and have elements that draw attention to themselves, while providing information about what they're selling. Poor ads are obtrusive rather than interesting, or leave the potential customer unaware of what was being offered. The worst ads annoy the customer enough that while the message--what is being offered and/or by whom--may be clear, they so annoying that those who see them actively avoid doing business with the advertiser. It is these worst ads that we complain about, and install ad-blockers to eliminate. They make the site unusable. For me, it was the full screen dancing baby. I don't even know what that was selling, but would certainly avoid it if I did. It is ridiculous for the webmasters to design new advertising products that are so annoying that they drive away the very eyeballs that they're supposed to be selling. NBC/iVillage/Gardenweb has known for many years that people are installing ad blockers to avoid seeing the annoying ads. They allow threads where we help each other to do so. They're not hurting from it. While it's true that we're not looking at their ads, it's also true that we probably don't pay attention to the regular ads anyway. They're probably using us as an experiment lab to see just how annoying their new advertising products are and testing how many complaints are generated. One thing you've left out of your business side thoughts is that we are providing free content for NBC/iVillage/Gardenweb. Kitchens Forum, especially, is very highly ranked in the search engines nowadays, and GW in general is, as well. There are a LOT of lurkers and click throughs who are the real targets of the advertising. Without the free content created by the members of the forums, there would be no eyeballs for the Powers That Be to sell. It's just a shame for all of the smaller sites that are trying to stay afloat with a little third party advertising, that we can't see their ads once we've blocked the really egregious ones. Instead of complaining to us that blocking ads is bad for your business, you should be complaining to NBC/iVillage/Gardenweb, and the other big sites full of obtrusively annoying ads, that they are the ones who are hurting your ability to support your site through advertising. With Ad-Block, there isn't even a link to accidentally click on with which to pay you....See MoreDiscussion thread: "Keep Agents Honest"
Comments (18)Lascatx - I know of which you speak (#1 evil). I'd talked to two or three different sellers in my neighborhood a few years ago that each interviewed several agents and chose their agent because they agreed to list at the price they wanted. The agent in question was one of those that did such things to get the listing, and just as expected, told the seller two weeks later that they needed to drop the price. And the same thing two weeks after that, until eventually the price was right where some of the other agents had suggested, only now it had been sitting on the market for six weeks with barely a showing. On a similar note, but more on the seller than the agent, a friend/mentor asked me to co-list a property with her (I don't normally do listings, but thought it would be a good experience). I did all my research and thought it would be a stretch to list the condo at $90K - it had been far overimproved and other identical but original condos had sold for between $50-70K. At the listing appointment, where I just took pictures and listened in, the seller wanted something like $135K (apparently thinking he could re-coup all his remodeling expenses) and they agreed on $125K. I told her that was crazy and that it wasn't a good idea for me to do this - my goal is to sell homes, not just list them for eternity - so I was out. I checked the listing periodically for months...at around the 9 month point it was still on the market for under $100K but the market had dropped further, and they weren't going to catch up. You might blame the agent here, but honestly it was the seller being completely unrealistic and he had an attitude that I doubt she could've talked sense into him. She should've walked away as well. It could very well be a seller like this making statements about "agents trying to price their homes too low". Any agent, listing or buyer's rep, who doesn't stress an inspection, is wrong. Even if it's new construction, I don't care - there isn't a perfect home. But, buyers need to realize that they get what they pay for. I recommended a couple of inspection companies to a buyer (the one I used for my own home and a personal investment property, and another one that has a good reputation around here), but, of course, told him that he could choose any inspector he wanted. And he chose the cheapest one he could find on the internet. The @#$% report was the most difficult and illogical thing to read through, and failed to mention the BROKEN GLASS in the bedroom window that could be clearly seen (from my house!!! two doors down!!!) Ugh!!! Fortunately, that was an "obvious" problem that we noted on the walk-through so it had already been taken into account. But all I could think was, what else did they miss?...See MoreAnother Backsplash thread....thought we wanted green...now not so sure
Comments (42)Hey guys..not at home right now, but the Sherwin Williams color on the walls is "cachet cream". When I put it up, the running joke for the entire paint project was, "wow...i'm having a hankering for something...sweet...and orange-like...but with vanilla in the middle. Creamsicle!!!" However, after it dried, it mellowed into something more creamy / yellow. It definitely has a yellow tint in the natural light. When we painted the walls, we didn't know what the backsplash was going to be, so it was more of a 'guess' seeing as though we'd either get it right or have to paint it again...and it is sooooo much easier to paint with no flooring, etc. in the room... Here is a link to the color: Sherwin Williams Cachet Cream...See MoreUmm, so, now I want a new headboard-plus random discussion on daybeds
Comments (86)I'm not a fan of the original hardware. Your room feels elegant and that one, the bolt, feels to jarring and clunky to me. So, just to add more project creep, why not get a wooden one, paint it the same color as the headboard and then glue it into place? #6, #9, and #10 would be so elegant and understated. (PS- I googled "small wooden medallion")...See MoreTreegeek Z6a (Boston)
