How much counter space...
Comments (11)In the corner between sink and stove there is about 4 feet total counter space but often just 2 feet nearest stove is adequate. Along the back of counter are white stoneware crocks to hold spatulas, tongs, etc. Plus pepper mill, small crocks sugar and kosher salt, cruets of Vinegar, Oil, 2 tall tins for bread, bamboo container to hold steak and paring knives, anything needed daily, in other words. The 24 inch counter between stove and refrigerator has a wooden rack along back which holds trivets, cooling racks, along with cutting boards and favorite chef's and paring knife, sharpening rod. And the best idea I've had: a heavy Scotch tape dispenser for freezer tape I can use one-handed. As is obvious, I don't subscribe to the "noone ever cooks here" look. lol I've got a wheeled cart with 36 x 24 inch butcher-block top sitting in adjacent laundry room and thought when buying I'd use it but it now holds potted plants...LOL My kitchen is large enough to use it as "island" but just not practical or needed really. I only cook for one now but often prepare several soups, roasts, pasta sauces, etc. in one marathon session for freezer. My little corner counter is more than adequate space although there's also that 24 inches on other side of stove next to refrigerator...mostly for quickly using butter, milk, etc, out of fridge then replacing...otherwise it might sit out too long. Might prefer a little more space on that counter for loading in the groceries or cleaning out fridge but it's not a big problem, and not really needed/used for meal prep. josh...See MoreHelp! How much space is between your upper cabinets and counter?
Comments (29)Mine are only 11.5! We re-used our 80 year old cabinets (all new insides and refinished) and in 1927 when they built houses, that's what they did. The downside -- very few appliances will fit under, but that's alright with me because I want them put away off the counter. The toaster and the Breville convection oven both fit (the Breville, just barely). The upside -- the plates and dishes inside are very easy to reach. I'm 5'3". Now 11 would be way too low for most people but going lower than the standard 18 can have its benefits....See MoreIdeas as how to work around a 32" counter top in a 1930s kitchen
Comments (15)I bet the cabinets are built in place. Moving/removing might destroy them. You may end up saving the doors and having new boxes made. Then they can be any height you want. The sink will be a problem if you don't replace/raise the window, too. You need that sink for the feel of the kitchen if you want to keep the look of the cabs. It will probably cost the same to just buy new cabinets. But that doesn't solve the sink problem in the same foot print. And if you change the foot print then you've opened a new can of worms. Changing the window size would probably be the best thing to do....See MoreMismatched Kitchen Counter-tops
Comments (35)Heatheron40, very nice. I asked a question about doing a tile countertop in our guest cabin recently as I feel like the look would complement the cabin aesthetic. Also I’m dying to learn to tile and thought it would be a fun place to start as it’s not an everyday space and I could take my time. Most of the responses were against. Basically stating the grout would make me crazy. The guy at the said what you’re saying I think, he said that modern grouts are more resistant to staining and such, and also to go with a tinted grout of some sort. I love your use of pattern to give it interest and intention!...See MorePatricia Colwell Consulting
