most important factors when buying major appliance
Comments (5)Sure fire way to sort out the Democrats and Republicans? For ME, 1) Style and Function: I want it to look good, look good with it's surroundings, and I want it to FIT me. (dishwashers have racks I like, Fridge has shelves I like, etc). Not everybody has this choice though. There was a time when I'd have taken a free refrigerator, regardless of looks or age, just as long as it worked. 2) Price: I still remember those free/ugly/working days. I can probably go out and buy any fridge out there, but, being able to do so, and being able to "afford" it are two different things. So.....PRICE: Given same / same / same / same...I'll choose the least expensive one most every time. 3) Reviews: I fully understand that NOBODY gets on the internet with nothing better to do than leave a review telling how great their appliance is. Most reviews come from people that are on the internet, trying to figure out what's wrong with their appliance, and seeing if anybody else has had the same problems. AND...You'll find 5 reviews on an appliance that 20,000 were sold. But, I do look and this does somewhat affect my decision. WARRANTY: Yep, darn near last. If you really get down to the fine print, many warranties, and store extended warranties don't really cover much. My touchpad on my oven went out in 14months. I bought the extended coverage at an extra cost. OH, sorry, that does not cover the touchpad. It only covers stuff that doesn't break or wear out. I look for the factory/manufacturer warranty, for the longest duration on PARTS (not labor). I'm fairly proficient at parts removal, replacement, and just generally screwing up most anything. So, if I can just get free parts? I'm good. Although, I don't usually expect even that. I just take it upon myself to get a decent deal to begin with, and save the extra money for repairs down the road..if needed....See MoreImporting appliances from Europe?
Comments (26)I actually considered this. So I think it's an interesting idea. Intellectually. I don't know where you live, but maybe Eurostoves, outside Boston, can offer some advice. They would know about differences in current, getting service, maybe insurance, maybe other lines. They might even be able to special order something, or tell you where to find it. Or tell you their thoughts on how to go about what you're going to do. Also, have you considered what's available in Canada? I could never get my head around how a device made for another electrical current could really be safe here. But that's me. Some people are terrified of canaries ... Or spoons. When I looked into having literally anything brought over, no matter what it was, a sink, an appliance, whatever, the cost of the object locally, plus shipping, added up to approximately the cost of an equivalent "eurostyle" object in the US - translation -- we're already paying for the shipping, we might as well get what we REALLY want. Plus -- and here is where I get truly evil -- the biggest hit in shipping is the first hundred pounds or so. After that it gets much cheaper. So while you're getting that shipped, if there's anything else you've been dreaming of getting shipped, like some nice tile, or a schranke or something cool, you might as well. In fact, (and I am honestly a fairly cheap person) you might be wise to get a cheap winter plane ticket, do the deal in person, see to the shipping on that end and make sure you get the appliance you need and you get your questions answered. And a little winter holiday! Good luck!...See MoreIf paint finish is your most important criteria
Comments (12)I wanted to report back guys. I am on a quest for the perfect warm white paint finish and this might be helpful for others who search the board. Today I met with a really nice KD who reps Crystal. She also had a Shiloh display in the showroom. I was surprisingly impressed with Shiloh- it was a heavily glazed and distressed paint finish so I couldn't really judge color, but the construction and overall finish felt really solid. I studied it and looked for things like seam lines and I was impressed with the paint application. I liked the Crystal too- it was an inset, simple shaker display in a matte white. Crystal seems to have a larger number of whites from which to choose though the Shiloh Soft White seemed nice... and Shiloh has some nice colors. I am considering doing a hutch type piece in a contrasting color. Both, though, felt very "modern" to me. Living in a nearly 100 year old house full of English farmhouse type antiques, I think I am just having trouble getting used to modern paint finishes. I know they are more durable but I think I am just going to have to wrap my head around the idea. I would prefer inset-I love the look- but I worry (or rather my DH worries) that it will be more challenging to install in our 'nothing is even, nothing is level' house and the KD did mention that it might be more prone to environmental expansion issues in an old house with more temperature swings than in modern houses. Decisions, decisions......See MoreA warning when buying appliances...
Comments (31)To clarify, nowhere on my invoice does it state it is a GE/Assurant warranty. But who knows, maybe ABT and GE both know that ABT only uses GE...but I don't know that. I faxed my invoice to GE, and they said they will try to straighten out the paperwork with it. My invoice establishes that I paid ABT for a warranty, it doesn't say who the warranty is with. I didn't even know it was with GE until ABT told me it was. I was originally told by GE the paperwork should come from ABT, and ABT did not disagree with that even after two days and many phone calls and speaking with different people at both companies (the idea of me sending my invoice to GE came up after I was transferred to another department at GE and basically begged them to help me since ABT was being such a PITA). If ABT had sent the paperwork to GE right away, and maybe asked them to expedite the processing (I find it hard to believe there isn't a better way for this to be dealt with), I would be getting this repaired Tuesday. Even if GE is able to process this with my paperwork it will take up to 8 business days (with the day count starting Monday) before I can schedule service (per GE). And that is assuming nothing goes wrong, they can use my invoice, etc. This thread doesn't even begin to document what I went through this past week. Many, many phone calls. Call to ABT, call to GE, asking ABT to fax paperwork, checking with GE if it was received, calling ABT again, calling GE again, speaking to someone else at GE, etc, etc. I am going to make more calls Monday. Thank you everyone for your support here, and to the people who have emailed me privately....See MoreToronto Veterinarian
