When is an open-box item too good to be true?

I've been looking for deals on faucets and sinks. I had hoped to buy something used in good condition.

I've come across various new, "open box" items on eBay for maybe 1/10 of the retail price of the unopened items. The sellers are highly rated.

I'm ok with sacrificing a warranty and getting an item that is lightly used. However, I worry that I might be buying a counterfeit product.

Could $120 for an open-box item that would otherwise sell for $1100 ever be legitimate? What are good ways to ensure I'm not buying a counterfeit product?
