Do I have enough protection?
Comments (13)Jim, our highs are supposed to only reach the low 20's Friday and Saturday, low 30's Saturday and low 40's Monday and Tuesday. Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights are supposed to be 10°, 8° and 10°. We are expecting 1-2 inches of snow tonight. Brooklyngreg, I did add a little more mulch around the bases of the washys this evening so I hope that helps. We have already had lows in the mid to low teens this past week. Our cold snaps usually don't last this long so I hope the washys can endure the sustained freezing temps with the protection I have done. I will probably end up wrapping the Trachy tomorrow....See MoreDo I have enough room to start tomatoes indoors?
Comments (6)LOL! Well, here in Salt Lake County, UT, we have long winters & summers, and short springs and autumns. It's weird; things start warming up in late February, but there are a lot of false starts, and it's not uncommon for us to have a lone snow storm in late April, even if we hadn't had snow in weeks. I don't know the spring frost date off hand. Judging by the sources on the web, it's probably somewhere between 4/18 and 4/26 (one site said 5/18, but I think that's way off). If 'spring frost date' literally refers to the average date of the last frost, then late April seems plausible, as Winter often takes a dying gasp around then. But generally, frosts are few and far between by then. If we have a frost in late April, it usually follows a week or two without frosts, so even though late April might typically be the spring frost date, I don't know if that's the best date to go by (maybe you guys can help me figure this out). I mean, the average low creeps above freezing by March 11th, according to Weather.com. I know that this is only an average, and that in any typical year, I can expect several frosts after this date, but late April still seems a bit late to me. But what do I know? Over the last few years, I bought my tomato plants at the garden center, and I always waited until May to plant them....See MoreDo I have enough room for a mantel? x-posted decorating
Comments (2)Since heat rises, there is a concern about the clearances. There are two variables that you need to be concerned with: (1) the distance between the top edge of the firebox and where you put the mantle; (2) how far out from the wall the mentle will extend. If the distance in (1) is small, you need to keep the depth of the mantle small. But if the distance in (1) is large (i.e., if the mantle is to be placed fairly high), then it can be deeper. Of course, if you opt for a mantle made of a noncombustible material, you probably do not need to be concerned with these clearance issues. I do not know what reasonable estimates for these clearances are. With prefab units, the manufacturer usually provides that info in their owner manual. You might want to post your question in the chat room at hearth.com. Those are reviewed by people live and breath fireplaces, and they might give you some further guidance. The last thing you want to do is install a mantle and later find out that it gets too hot. Another alternative, if you live in a subdivision of similar homes, is to ask a neighbor if you can find one who has made renovations similar to what you have in mind. Or you could ask a chimney sweep. Sometimes, to prompte good will, they'll give you some guidance on the phone. Of if your chimney is due for a cleaning, that would be a good time to ask....See MoreLayout Question...Do I have room for an island?
Comments (50)I don't like islands?!?! Well, that's news to me! Too funny! Especially since my kitchen has one and I intend to keep it when we remodel! I wonder where that was written and by who? I'm so glad to hear I've helped you. Playing with kitchen design is fun for me (yeah, I should have my head examined, lol) but I've always liked puzzles. I may look at a kitchen plan through my eyes and my experience but I also keep in mind that it's not my kitchen and try my best to put the OP's wishes first. The only time I discourage an idea - and I try to do that as gently as possible - is when that idea is unsound (won't work IRL) or unsafe. But even then I try to couch it as YMMV advice. However, words on the 'net are open to misinterpretation and no matter how carefully I word a post, I can't prevent someone from reading unintended intent into my words. But enough about that nonsense. I'm really happy to have helped you and I look forward to seeing the unveiling of your new and improved kitchen. Do you have a timeline? Good luck with your fridge search. We had a heck of a time finding one to fit our space. In the 18+ years since we'd bought our last one, fridges have grown to humongous sizes! I just looked at your kitchen posted above. Is the fridge cabinet a separate unit? If so, you can either raise it and cover up the move with molding (we did this to cover up the fact that we raised the cab by 2") or remove it and replace it with shelving. Working with existing cabinetry isn't easy so you'll need to think outside of the (cabinet) box. Ooooh, sorry, I couldn't resist that one. ;-)...See Moreabbi_a30
