Please share your Rubio Monocoat floor pictures with me :)

We are thinking of applying Rubio Monocoat to our 65+ year old red oak floors. We like the Cotton White, but they have so many pretty colors. I have tried to find as many examples online as I could as well looked on Rubio Monocoat‘s Instagram; but their aren’t a ten of examples. Please send me pictures of your floors if you used Rubio Monocoat and what stain you used.

I have white oak floors, and used just “white” —as I recall cotton white has some yellow in it. Not sure how it will go on top of red oak, but I am sure you will try a sample in a closet or some obscure place? I love this product. I had just a natural polyurethane on red oak in a prior house and though pretty, they showed a lot of dust and dog hair. I cleaned religiously on my hands and knees every week. With these, I vacuum weekly and use a very mild cleaner from Rubio or just a damp rag, monthly. Be sure you do two coats. I only did one the first time and had a lot of problems with kitchen stains,

ater, etc. the second coat did the trick! I just realized these photos aren’t great, I will try and take some more closer when I get home.

jkayepierce, do you still love your Rubio floors? We have about 1200 SF and want to finish with Rubio white. Small house, busy family. How are yours holding up?

the nice thing about rubio is you can mix colors together. to achieve a color you want. Im not as familiar with they color choices off the top of my head, but going to the website as jfcwood suggested is a good start. ordering some sample colors to play around with is also a need to do. Also i would take up Ultimate's offer to see his pics. Theres no doubt you should be able to come up with a recipe that you will love.

Thanks Mary, I have read through a ton of the Rubio threads here and I see consistent opposing views in many of them. I also don't see a lot of people commenting who have all new construction and fresh solid red oak floors. In addition, we aren't changing the floor color too far off from natural. Maybe a very slight shade of brown but for the most part, we plan on going mostly natural. I know a lot of the Rubio issues have been with darker floors. With that said, I guess I am really interested in anyone who has used Bona Craft Oil 2k as I have seen basically nothing on that.

So figured I'd follow up on our post, sorry it took me so long. We ended up going with Waterlox on our workspace countertops and Rubio monocoat on our island bar top. I am extremely happy with both so far. For the workspace counters, I bought unfinished white oak and we put 4 or 5 coats of Waterlox on it. It takes time for the application and curing, but now that it's done I would def do it again. The finish seems to be very durable and certainly easy to clean. We have had standing water, red wine, dough, etc. and all have cleaned up easily. For the bar top, I bought black walnut and the company I bought it from actually had the option to have it finished in Rubio monocoat. So I can't speak on the application process. Although it doesn't get the abuse and work that our Waterlox counters get, it has stood up great to what we have put it through. Standing water that was left wipe up no problem and don't leave stains. The Waterlox seems to have a little more gloss or sheen to it. Both seems to bring out awesome color in the wood. I would say the Waterlox is definitely durable, but we haven't put the monocoat through the same abuse. It's been about 8 months so far and we have no complaints about either.

There have been issues/complaints about the Invisible Protect AT. It can show PLENTY of foot prints, oil prints, dust prints, prints...with some knee prints, and hand prints, and dog prints...cat prints...sock prints...pretty much anything that hits the floor can leave a 'print'. When looking for low gloss, remember it can be HAZY (the chemical additives cause the finish to look frosty/non-clear). Many people find low gloss to be very difficult to live with. Personally I would work with Bona Traffic HD gloss on your FIRST coat...and then super matte (the commercial grade Traffic HD) on the second coat. Bona's NordicSeal is ahead of the Loba 'white' option. I love Loba 2K Supra AT. I've sold it. I've worked with it myself. I've tested the toughness of it on cork (very delicate wood) and loved it. My customers and clients LOVED it! The Invisible Protect AT does not have the same following. For low gloss + whitish look = Bona Traffic HD has a STRONG following and has been super successful.

We did Rubio about 5 years ago. Lots of issues with staining, and many people posting on Houzz have had a much worse experience than we have.

Knowing everything I know now, I might do hard wax oil again, but a different brand.

IMO, look at Osmo (somewhat higher VOC's, but much better to live with)!

Hi Laura, I still love my Rubio floors, but I think if you are prone to worry about stains and have a busy family, I might agree with Mary Elizabeth and try another option. It pains me to say that, as I love the look and feel, but I am constantly on watch for my guests dropping or spilling something. And if it’s oily, it’s a problem. I can usually sand lightly and reapply some Rubio, and it all blends, but you have to be OK with that. Best of luck on whatever you decide and let us know!!
