Should the glass in Butler's Pantry Match Kitchen Glass?
Comments (6)The answer really depends on the orientation. If this is a passage between the rooms, so that the cabinet in there is basically perpendicular to the kitchen, and if there's a closed wall rather than open counter, then there is no reason at all why the cabinets, counter and glass have to have anything to do with each other. They only need to not-clash. That is, no OTK or gloss modern kitchen with rustic distressed Sundance style BP. That would be bad. Really bad. If the BP cabinet faces into the kitchen, you'll want them to have a stronger resemblance, but can still have different elements. I don't think the Antique German glass isn't really that different looking from clear, for this purpose. It's not like you're doing bamboo etching vs. clear, or merry-go-round glass! Long winded way of saying go for it. Warning: BP is good place for marble. If you're pouring wine, however, do it on a tray.... :)...See MoreAre ceiling height cabinets in the kitchen too much with 11" ceiling?
Comments (54)Oh boy, I'm going to have to agree that might look very out of proportion and top heavy if you take it to the ceiling height of 11'. 132" - 36" base cab - 18" or 20" countertop to upper cab space. So are we talking 6 1/2 feet of upper cabinets??? That's a lot! If you are using a 42" for the first upper, you would have 34-36" left. Am I calculating that right? I remember researching this when I was planning for my stacked uppers. The recommendation for stacked cabinets is about 1/3 over 2/3 for a balanced look. So in your case that would be a 21" cab over your 42" cab. If you did a normal size crown molding on top that would look very nice imho. I would think that would give you plenty of storage. I did have this photo saved and it doesn't look too bad to me. I don't know how tall the ceiling is and they are not the 1/3, 2/3. It may be the ladder rail breaking it up? I think I saved it because I was loving the cabinet color and the cow painting! Lol!...See MoreKitchen Wall Cabinet Height for 90" ceiling.
Comments (9)As Livia mentioned, having cabinets go all the way to the ceiling is not recommended. Ceiling heights are rarely the same throughout the room and cabinets to the ceiling will highlight these issues - if they can even fit in all places! Instead, use a minimum of 2-piece molding with one piece "filler" (flat panel - no detail) that can be cut to fit and a piece for the top that is the same all around. We used 3-piece: . . The middle piece (Stock-S) is the "filler". Our ceiling height varied by an inch or so throughout the Kitchen. To handle this: Three pieces: -- Crown - top piece -- Stock-S - filler piece in the middle -- SoffitA - bottom piece The bottom piece ("SoffitA") was installed on top of the cabinets. It's the same size all over. The top piece ("Crown") was installed on top of the filler piece ("Stock-S") and is the same size all over. The middle filler piece ("Stock-S") was installed b/w the Crown & SoffitA. However, the height of the piece varies. It was cut to fit b/w the Crown and SoffitA to account for the varied ceiling height. The same can be done with two pieces - the equivalent of the "Crown" and "Stock-S" pieces. Doing this makes it look like the Kitchen's ceiling height is the same all over and makes the cabinets look customized for your space....See Moreif kitchen cabinets were cars, which one is the Toyota Corolla
Comments (17)Cabinets are a bit ridiculous in the pricing. There are clear differences between expensive and cheap. But expensive is just ridiculous for what you get (IMO). I have (and I suspect a lot of people have) lived with cheap stuff (apartments, new rental townhouse), Ikea, and moderately expensive (Kitchencraft). I really hate cheap drawers. But we put them in a rental house (Aristokraft). Ikea is probably the closest thing to a Toyota Corolla. The Corolla is a horrible car that is technologically inferior to every competitor. It is the number one selling small car. It hasn't changed significantly in 20 years (unlike Ikea) and it is bullet proof because of that - which has value for people who view cars as appliances (which I agree, they are). I just installed J&K in a rental. This is a Chinese import brand that is going to make Sophie blow her top. It is RTA and the A is usually done by the distributor. It has soft close everything and full extension drawers. It uses something that looks like plywood for the box but is more like a hybrid of OSB and plywood. It is shockingly inexpensive. The finish is pretty darn good. It has less choices than a Toyota Corolla.... Fillers are a necessary evil. We yanked 30 year old custom cabinets out that had huge fillers. Not sure why they did that in custom - perhaps a design element. But fillers are needed for door swings, in corners etc. Yes - with true custom, they can be optimized and only used when truly needed. Annoying? Depends on your viewpoint. Less aesthetically pleasing - sure. Go to a cabinet showroom, go to Ikea. Lots of research is needed here. Have to decide if the extra $30k is worth it to you....See MoreK R
