What would you do with this exterior
Comments (13)The person who built this house actually bumped the garage out 2 feet to the side (when looking at the house) so that may be why it looks wide. We are not doing this at all, instead we brought the garage out 3 feet toward the street. We are going to use board batten shutters that WILL be wide enough to cover the windows (well, to look like they could) No shutters on the porch windows... Should we scrap the shutters all together? Now that you say that, they will look silly on the window to the left of the foyer, since it's also a double... The whole front stone is not an option = too much $$$ We have considered stone around the foundation... http://picasaweb.google.com/jlanrowilkes Those are pics of our ACTUAL house that is currently being built... We did upgrade the windows, using all ANderson 400 series and we aren't using those half circle things anywhere, our windows will just be rectangular everywhere except the foyer one will be slightly rounded... WORTHY - i love the idea based on the photo you posted, but unfortunately we are already under construction so we are somewhat limited on what we can do now. Here is another photo of a house similar to ours, let me know what you think of this one:...See MoreTudor Bungalow - what would you do with the exterior?
Comments (18)Why on earth paint over well built brickwork? Expensive to do and needing to be maintained forever. Just get the garden sorted out as the priority. At present you have a pretty house marooned in an empty space. It would look beautiful with a lush garden around it. If you want to pursue the "Tudor" theme, they would not have wasted their time and resources lime washing brick. Limewash is an ancient technique but was for preserving wattle and daub walls or for cleanliness inside buildings. And for heavens sake don't to be tempted to stick on false 'beams'....See Morewhat would you do to improve the exterior of our house?
Comments (15)Thanks all! Ok, so no shutters. Got it! 1 less project ;) And we are actually fog coating with that beige color stucco. No paint. I do love the mock up of the darker color! But I wanted a lighter color for hopefully keeping the house cooler. I would have loved off-white but afraid of looking dirty. I’m happy with the color. Need to get the other 3 sides fog coated now. And I think I like the darker brown trim along the roofline too. Our windows are brown/bronze so I think that’s a nice compliment. But I’m still unsure about the trim around the garage and front doors. I like the idea of a lighter color (grey/green or a greige) there. Something that will compliment the house & the landscaping which will have all shades of green. And also my teal/turquoise pots (that I don’t have yet). I’m trying to get it to have a Mediterranean feel even though I know it’s not a Mediterranean style. ;) But I’m having a hard time envisioning the grey/green or greige trim. Can anyone mock that up? Any other thoughts on the trim? Here’s a pic of our front entry. It’s a work in progress! But you can see the trim. And clearly I need to tile the floor but we might extend it a bit. I’m thinking travertine. It was a very 70s dark brown time with flowers (?!?). We’re getting there! Thanks all! Keep the ideas coming please :) Love them!...See MoreWhat would you do to update this exterior?
Comments (5)@decoenthusiaste Thank you for your comment! So when I say recent, I guess it's been a little over 6 months, time flies! Our neighborhood homes are all very unique builds from the 80's on very large lots so I'm not overly concerned with clashing as there isn't anyone too close to us but it's also hard to pinpoint a neighborhood "style". Many of them have the contrasting color outlining (which I'm not a huge fan of either), and a combination of materials: stone, stucco, brick, wood siding, etc. I'm holding off on the landscaping up around the house because we will probably be doing a major reno to the exterior and I don't want to worry about new plantings being messed up during that process. I have attached close ups of the existing door. Ideally we'd replace it with a double door and add some type of covered porch, though I've been told that would be tricky with the roof line (I don't have enough experience to agree or disagree with this). We've been toying with the idea of squaring up all the arches and going with some style of Hardie Board Siding instead of the stone/stucco combo to help update the overall look. Any thoughts on this or helping to add character to the house? I just feel like it's very blah and not the warm inviting look we're going for....See Morejenaryl
