pads under area rugs

I have new vinyl plank flooring over slab foundation. I will put down a few area rugs, not 100% sure where? Maybe under a coffee table, some just on the floor next to our beds, some just for the dogs to lay on.

I actually found a perfect, cute, area rug at the thrift store for $25.00 in new condition. (I love to shop thrift stores!) So I look for pads for area rugs...and am confused what type to get...and the cost! One site the pad under my $25.00 4 foot by 6 foot thrift store rug was around $45.00!!!!!

Why is everything so complicated.

Do I even have to use pads? What material should the pads be made of? What is a reasonable price to pay?

On vinyl you need to be sure that the pad (or backing on the rug itself) doesn't contain latex or rubber -- that can permanently discolor the vinyl. Also, if the back of the rug is rough (like sisal or another fiber), it can leave fine scratches on the floor over time.

Ikea is a great source for anti-slip rug pads -- they have one that is a felt type so it adds a little cushioning, which is supposed to make your rug last longer. You do want an anti-slip pad, to help keep the rug laying flat and in place.

I have their anti-slip mesh pad and it works well, but I am going to replace it with the felt anti-slip the next time they send me a coupon.

I have luxury vinyl tile in the kitchen and laundry room. I needed a pad that wouldn’t discolor my flooring and ordered the Anchor Grip pad from Rug Pads USA. They aren’t inexpensive, but they do work really well. I ordered an 8x6 pad and cut it to fit for all 4 of my mats. That was cheaper than ordering 4 smaller size mats. The pad cuts easily with a sharp pair of scissors.

We are getting our 20 year old hardwoods refinished right now because they are trashed! Here are the "really" bad things we've noticed. Do not push your furniture across the floor! It will leave gouges. Buy tons of felt protective pads in all different sizes and put them on EVERYTHING. You also need to replace them frequently and keep the pads clean (if there is any grit or dirt on the pad the protective pad turns to sandpaper). Put an area rug under the sink/DW and water dispenser to catch drips (and shake and clean under rugs regulary so no dirt is trapped under them). Our kids have plasma cars and they have destroyed the floors so I would say no wheels at all on the floor. Don't push that piano! Swiffers or dust mops are great and help keeping it clean.

The pad is as much for the rug as it is for the floor it is sitting on. Rug pads extend the life of the rug as well as keep them in place. Over time the rug backing can put fine scratches in any hard surface floor whether it's wood, laminate, or tile. Even area rugs with furniture on it can move a little bit. That's why they make a special pad for area rugs over wall to wall carpet application to prevent "walking" of the rug.

I have never had a problem with the rubber waffle type pads ruining my wood floors. Rubber on vinyl will discolor the flooring. You can buy fabric backed rugs and since it will not be in a traffic area you won't need to worry about it slipping but it will not scratch the floor. If you get one with a rough back I would still use something under it because it will slide when you move the table for your laptop use and then you will end up with scratching the floor eventually.

Thanks Jan, and points taken. The house is not an open concept barn, it's a 1958 home with doors to every room (even the kitchen), but hardwood floors throughout and large windows. Sound really seems to carry between the two floors. The rugs we've added so far have helped. We will just keep adding more as the budget allows. I would still appreciate any advice on whether it's feasible to lay down cork underlayment as an area rug. I really need a runner for a long upstairs hallway that's 15' x 4', with a couple of jogs. Decor isn't really important in that space, just sound absorption. Cutting pieces from a roll of cork would be much easier than piecing together area rugs to cover the 3 different sections. The hallway connects all of the bedrooms, and the stairwell funnels downstairs noise straight up to the hallway and bedrooms.
