Comments (4)Yes, the where and how would be helpful. Have you ever fertilized this poor baby; Is it water-logged; or is it getting enough water that really wets the soil and not just runs thru'? I've had all three problems, plus an ant one that actually killed a thriving Bay in a huge pot. The ants built a nest with-in the roots. They must make some sort of coating to keep their nest dry because when I pulled the dead plant everything was as dry as a bone... roots, nest, soil, even tho' I had watered it regularly....See MoreAphids in Tall Tree
Comments (14)I was wondering if it was a locust. I'll try to get my SLR out with its macro lens this weekend if weather plays nice. I noticed several different types of insects on it when I first checked so probably some there for the tree, others for the honeydew, others for the other bugs. I'll check with the tree service we used to remove a couple of small trees in the way of a fence going in to see if they do the root treatment. I'm pretty sure the previous owner (my grandmother before she passed) only had a lawn service come for everything so maybe they did something I never noticed. The only thing I know for sure they did other than trim everything and fertilize the lawn was put out grubex. There is a chance this has been a problem in the past and just never dealt with. My grandmother only had one car and kept it in the garage so it wouldn't have been a problem. This most recent winter was far more mild than the one before so that could have been why I didn't have a problem last year and do now. On another note, if I ever do get that tree removed, dealing with the stump would be a pain since the gas line somehow runs like right under (maybe ever so slightly to the side) of the thing. The line was recently flagged for my fence going in in the backyard. So that sure wouldn't be fun. That would be one of my main concerns if the tree ever fell. Luckily it seems to lean away from the house, but obviously you can't ever be sure which way it would fall. I think yearly treatments and inspections may be due....See MoreAphids on my plumb tree!
Comments (6)What I would do, and have done with success, is to blast off all the bugs with lots of forceful garden hose water. After, I would wrap a couple rings of tightly stretched 1" wide masking tape over smooth areas of the lower trunk bark with the sticky side facing outward. The bugs trying to walk across the tape will either turn around or get snagged by the glue as long as the stickiness doesn't decline. They will be able to crawl beneath the tape if there are any bark grooves below the tape. It would be good to check the tape each day to see if any small lizards happen to need gentle rescuing. Once the tape loses it's stickiness, just put new tape on top of them, or replace the tape if it is clogged with bugs....See MoreAphid infestation in large mature linden tree
Comments (13)where are you ... that you would be thinking of treating a deciduous tree in mid September ... for about half of us ... leaves will be falling in a month or so ... and it would not really be high on the cost/benefit ratio.. to bother treating ... and cold night temps meanwhile ... will take care of them ... some trees just have to go .. period ... and if.. as you say.. its driving you crazy...well.. just get rid of it ... period ... one might suggest.. your mental health is of higher value than some random carp tree ... [carp in the sense of driving you crazy] .... this is another situation of a prior owner leaving the new owner a nightmare .. and the new owner hesitating on removing the problem ... if they had left you a paisley kitchen counter.. ala 1970s ... would you hesitate to get rid of that nightmare??? .. just do it .. ken wait.. it was the paisley wallpaper .. change search to avacado ... if you dont like the harvest gold.. lol ... or maybe it was the shag carpeting... https://duckduckgo.com/?q=1970s+kitchen&t=ffcm&iax=1&ia=images https://duckduckgo.com/?q=1970s+shag+carpeting&t=ffcm&iar=images&iax=1&ia=images...See Morenancyjane_gardener
