What kind of valance used with panels on decorative rods?
Comments (9)Thanks for your input, everyone. I can't think of how to make a valance work, unless they are willing to give up the decorative rod. They bought that when we were out shopping for the curtains. We didn't find any curtains on that trip. I think they wanted to come home with SOMETHING for this project. But buying the rod is working backwards, in my mind. I need to figure out the functionality of this first. My problem is this is so far away from my own perspective, that I have a hard time getting into what will work for THEM, and not for ME. To me, if I needed privacy, I would put up opening and closing drapes, end of story. But they have nixed the traverse rods, saying they always break and are a headache to replace. I understand that, mine do too. I've replaced my patio door traverse rods more times than I can count. The one I last bought was over $100 at Loomcraft upholstery and drapery supply, for the heaviest sturdiest one I could find. But now I'm still pulling the drapes by hand, because the cords broke for the third time, and I'll be *&$#ed if I take those down again and replace the cords. Traverse rods for big windows like theirs will cost a fortune....See Morenow that kitchen is painted... onto valance fabric!
Comments (57)I don't know if this will help. I finally picked a blue fabric that I love. I was afraid to do totally blue as I need to tie in some chestnut linen drapes, gray walls, and mossy gray green couches in the family room attached on. I wanted to find a fabric that would work in all areas since it's all open. I'm going to do a pillow and trim out a pillow in the fabric besides the window. Find a color that you'd like throughout your home for flow. Then, the blue (if that is where you are going) won't be so jarring to you. Especially if you're afraid of bold and blue. Schumacher fabric is pretty expensive, but the quality and the colors are so, so lovely. It's really more beautiful in person. Since you're only making valances (I'm making a cafe curtain), the cost isn't as much for a wow statement. But, it's still kind of pricy. You can find tons of schumacher fabric on ebay. Maybe in a colorway you'd like. I ended up buying this beauty for a song. Seriously. Three yards for eight dollars. Enough for some pillows and a cafe curtain. It's normally 100+ per yard! For the price, I thought I'd try it. And, it worked out more than perfect. You'd be surprised what you'll find given time. Don't jump into anything you aren't sure about or love. I've attached a link the fabric. I think it would also work in your home. The darker blue and medium blue aren't scary. They are really rich. Also, make sure to take into consideration the actual fabric if you're making them yourself. This is 100% linen. Linen will droop eventually. I will end up shortening my cafe curtain 1/4 of an inch at least to allow for it. Obviously cotton will shrink when you wash it. Things like that. Good luck! Comments (3)I'm keeping the material on my couch until I replace all furniture, but that won't be till next year. Yes, I want to replace those valances, don't like them anymore. the whole house is sorta country theme...it's placed on 26 acres, those windows overlook the acreage/pond/our horses. It's a living room w/TV. Here are some more pictures...some will be the white walls, we just painted this past weekend. http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/jennifercox5508/IMG_1000.jpg http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/jennifercox5508/IMG_1001.jpg http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/jennifercox5508/IMG_0963.jpg http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/jennifercox5508/Deer/IMG_0002.jpg...See Morewhat type of curtain would be best for this bathroom window?
Comments (10)I agree, roman shade would be first choice but a couple others for your consideration: 1) you could make a perfect size cheap cafe curtain to cover 1/2 -2/3 of the window with some iron on hemming tape either rod pocket orclip on curtain rings, that way you let the top half of the light in 2) window obscuring sheets are very easy to apply and found on amazon. I have the former in my downstairs powder and latter in my upstairs bath and I've never had a peeling or moisture problem 3 years later...See Morepamghatten
