Need help with Identifying American Standard shower faucet

The text disappeared... Here again:

My main shower is old and in need of updating. The shower is a single handle valve. The gold finish plate over the valve has a SA stamped on it which apparently stands for American Standard. At any rate, the valve works fine but I was wondering about update or upgrade options. Without tearing into the wall can I find the correct updated trim packages available today?

I suppose I would have to tear into the wall to replace the valve?

The existing main bath is entirely builders grade fixtures and I would like to upgrade but dont want to tear-out.

What to do?

That little mark on the bottom is a CSA stamp, Canadian Standards Administration or some such. Kinda like a UL stamp in the US.

If you know the supply house your plumber used, they may have your order on file. Subcontractors often give a job name when they place orders, so if yours did and you know where they shopped (or can ask), you will likely have your exact order. I am not 100% sure, but I think that each brand uses the same valve on most of their units (except that thermostatic valves are different). I will watch your post with interest, I have to do the same in a bathroom of our house. If I learn more, I will reply.

If you follow this forum much you may be aware of who I am and that I read and comment on some 30+ forums, both DIY and Professional, daily. So my comments regarding AS were strictly from the viewpoint of what I have read. If my old memory serves me correct AS is widely discussed and recommended by professionals and I havent read of any customer service problems but that certainly doesnt preclude such problems. As an overall view and opinion of the mid priced range I would say AS is well liked Moen probably the most well liked and Price-Pfister the one that I see the most complaints and out and out venom about. As for me, personally I have Grohe. More expensive but great european construction and I am very satisfied. Ultimately you get what you pay for as to plastic parts or more solid construction. I do find it hard to believe that any product that would only last 1 year would be able to last in the market place and additionally escape vast public criticism. Happy Shopping

Can't remove American Standard faucet handle

The installation instructions show that the entire handle (everything you see above the counter) screws on to the deck mount. You may need to spray the bottom of the handle with a penetrating oil if the taps have been on for a while. I hope this helps.

I need help identifying my shower faucet valve seat thread size

i can't id thread pitch from the photo, but I can tell that won't work. Don't try to force it. Usually they have a metal guide at the store you can screw the seat into to confirm diameter and thread pitch. Use that to make sure you have the right one. Also, I'm not sure that seat - even with the right thread pitch- would work. You want the face of the seat to match the one it's replacing.

Dang! How do I swap out the hardware? I want a handle rather than a screw out plastic knob to turn on and adjust the water. How do I know what is compatible?

Remove the handle and the base plate and go to a plumbing store or your local Home Depot or Lowes... You find replacements without knowing what brand - there are all sorts of adapters and ways to figure out what the inside spline is like...

The whole bath has served it's time. It's of an era where best practices were in flux, and you have a really good chance of having moisture behind the walls. A 30 year old valve with no scald control shouldn't ever stay.

Time to gut it and redo it all.
