Is the area of the new bedroom and bath close to where company would be? If so, could you have an entrance from the hall in addition to the entrance from the bedroom? Could you isolate the sink and toilet from the rest of the bath with a pocket door, and if so, would there be room in the rest of the space to have a shower and another sink? If your kids are anything like mine, the sink won't always be presentable when someone stops in and needs to use the bathroom, so if there was a way to divide the space, that would be ideal. On the other hand, maybe you could give your kids incentive to keep it spotless. If your house was on the market, for example, they would have to get used to keeping things pristine for showings. This could be a great exercise in teaching time management and cleanliness! One of my sons, in particular, was never good at building in enough time to put the toothpaste away, or to wipe up little puddles (and I take the blame on not insisting on better behavior), and I know I could have made it non-negotiable if I wanted to invest the energy. I agree with everyone that you don't need a powder room. We're doing a big remodel, too, and I find it is really hard to know when to stop. No house is going to be perfect, and you don't need to make every possible improvement just because " the best time to o it is when the walls are open". As Engineer Chic said, it's a lot of toilets to clean if you add another, and I also feel it is one more thing that can break, leak, or go out of style.

I just added a shower to the powder room on my first floor! In order to accomplish that, I moved my laundry room to the 2nd floor, near the bedrooms. This shower had been on my wish list for a long time - after a broken foot, foot surgery, and my son's knee surgery. Aging parents is another reason. My Mom stayed with me for two weeks when she was 97 - I wish I'd had this shower for her then as she could no longer manage the 13 steps to my 2nd floor.

In my last home I did my powder room with an English library sort of 'vibe'. The walls were a deep red(Balmoral Red/Ralph Lauren),and I used pictures, small mirrors, corbels, plates, etc. from ceiling to baseboard. All frames were very ornate and were either gold or black/ gold. If you have a standard builders grade mirror, get rid of it or add a heafty frame, which is what I did, or remove the mirror and use a decorative hanging mirror, not necessarily intended for a bathroom. I also hung a small narrow shelf directly in front of 'the loo' which held small vintage books, since I thought it would add to that English library look I was going for. When I put the home on the market to sell, instead of a negative, it was a hit! I did leave the little shelf since the new owner wanted to re-create the look.

The same people who make Murphy Beds also make special doors that look like a bi-fold bookcase (if you want) or they can actually make up any look within reason! Wondering about the placement of this door and if it can actually become a china cabinet or bookcase (if that's preferred).
