Caragana ( Siberian Pea shrub )

My siberian peashrub seems to really be growing slowly. Have had small shrubs planted now for a couple of years. Has anyone had the same experience?

Hi jimbolini, I have an ongoing issue with adding my email link here. I was told that becaue it is a root graft that if i take cutting from it and root them that they will not grow as a weeping bush but as upright. This is sort of incorrect. If you take a cutting from the weeping part, you'll almost certainly get a weeping plant. This is how they made the weeping plant in the first place. Just as if you take a cutting from the graft, you'll get the graft again. Whether it will remain stable is an additional issue. This may be a hybrid, but likely it is a sport, chosen for that characteristic and asexually propagated from cuttings via grafting. I'm not sure how vigorous the cutting will be, and there is the possibility that it will not flourish (which is the reason for the graft). Some sports also revert to the parents' characteristics, which is why the cost for such plants is so high, as it takes much effort to make them stable. I donate most of my extra seeds to my "Seeds for Classrooms" program that I arranged with the local school board and schools (6,000 pkg a couple months ago). According to the pfaf website, it is C. arborescens that has an anti-cancer effect, not C. microphylla (boisii). Arborescens can grow to 18' tall and seems like too much trouble to me, microphylla according to J.L.Hudson where I bought the seeds only to 8'? I guess I will have to be sure to keep them trimmed. It has grey-green foliage and sounds attractive. I'm looking for plants along the permaculture principle of mixed communities with multiple purposes, and one of my needs is for plants to cover the ground and shade out weeds so I don't have to work so hard fighting weeds, especially weedy grasses. It's also supposed to fix nitrogen. C. microphylla also should have an edible seed produced in abundance. Here is a link that might be useful: pfaf

It is a woody plant. Most woody plants will spend the first 1-3 years growing roots to support the plant before a lot of top growth is visible. But there is lots of info we don’t know.

What is the soil like?

Did you water them regularly for at the very least the first season in the ground? Even drought tolerant plants need water the first season or two if they aren’t getting enough regular rain. You need to stick your finger down into the soil a few inches to see what the soil moisture actually is.

Were they bare root or in potting soil? Sometimes there is an issue with water movement between potting soil and the native soil, leaving the rootball either soggy or parched.

Did you remove all plants around their base for a foot or three and mulch to decrease competition from other plants?

Were they tiny twigs at planting or 5 gallon pots or something in between?

Fortunately it isn't too late to destroy them as they are classified as non-native invasive. There are much better native trees/shrubs that would suit the environment better. This USDA document describes some of the baddies out there, including Caragana. You can assist your local environment by sticking to only native plants.
