What tile goes in the hall - match the existing color or different?

We are replacing carpet and wanted to replace the carpet in the halls with tile instead of carpet. Trying to keep the carpet longer by replacing high traffic areas (halls) with tile and only carpeting the bedrooms. The halls butt up to existing tile, which isn't getting replaced. Our question is do you choose a tile that is a completely different color or try and get close to the existing color with a transition of some sort? If we go completely different, then it stands out when you look across the rooms. If we go with a similar color, then it might look like we tried to match the color and missed. Also, do we go with the same size (12x12) tiles that exist or go with a different size (12x24)? There are bathrooms off of each of the hallways which we are going to expand the tile we choose for the hall into the bathrooms as well.
