If you had a laundry room...what would be its decor theme?
Comments (59)I have laundry closets, one on the bottom floor and one on the top. The top is a stackable so there's no room for decor. I wish I'd have made that room just a tad bigger so I didn't have to keep laundry soap in the adjoining bathroom (it's in a huge glass container though and everyone thinks I dropped a fortune on bath salts to fill it heh heh). If I ever have a real room dedicated to laundry I'd do antique butlers pantry as my look. Painted cabinets, marble counters, laundry machines hidden behind cabinets, beautiful lighting, a huge fold and storge area....heaven in the laundry....and I'd like a full time maid to stand there and deal with the laundry as well...as long as we're dreaming! My lower closet is in our family room. I painted the walls in a soft cream and the cabinets in a color called patince (a very soft yellow). It has my giraffe door handles for access, and the doors are painted in metalic chalkboard....See MoreAnyone pick paint color FIRST when decorating?
Comments (17)Letting a beautiful rug form the basis for a room's color scheme works fine, as long as you A) already happen to own a beautiful rug or B) you have somewhere else to live while you wait to find a beautiful rug that you C) fall in love with and D) can afford, and then, gradually, build the rest of your room around it. For a long time, that's been the 'ideal' decorating scenario. But for those people who can't wait for the planets to align--which group includes myself-- picking your wall color first works out OK. Of course, as Dilettante discovered, you may find that the perfectly lovely color you choose for your walls doesn't come in anything but paint. And, if you're into the perfectly co-ordinated look, that can be a problem, but it it doesn't have to be. You don't hear people critiquing the blue of the sky because it doesn't match the blue of the pool, or the lake, or the iris, or your kid's eyes. That's all irrelevant. The blue is a background, so it doesn't need to match, and I generally take that low-stapproach when I'm working on a room for a client. Life's hard enough already without worrying about stuff like that. And at home, I never use my wall color anywhere else in a room, certainly not that exact color. It's lots more interesting if there's some contrast, or even a little dissonance between foreground & background. It makes the room look less stagy & contrived, and, basically, less decoratorish--and I say that as a decorator. So if I were determined to have a yellow room, I would get one, and I wouldn't worry about not finding yellow fabrics to go with it, but would just slap the color on the wall. Then, if it takes me a year or two to put the rest of the place together, I at least have a nice color in the meantime. That ought to count for something. By the last inning, when I've got most of my furnishings, I can always change to a different yellow if I think it might better complement the rest of the stuff, but then, maybe it's that dissonance thet gives the room its life. All I can say is that my furniture is a hodgepdge of different woods, fabrics, patterns & textures and that it's all worked equally well in rooms of a bunch of different colors: cornemal yellow, duck egg blue, spruce green,, paper bag brown, oyster gray, olive green & the newest one, Farrow & Ball's Churlish Green, the first time I've ever used an off-the-shelf paint color. So don't get all hung up on the rules about sequence. You can either follow the rules or the you can make up your own rules. That's what I do. One of my favorite New Yorker cartoons shows an older chef talking to his assitant who's adding some herbs to a pot: "Look, who CARES how much oregano you use!" It's like that. Don't make yourself crazy. It's only decorating. Regards, Magnaverde....See MoreCreative Ideas for built in TV nook
Comments (9)Wow, you guys are terrific! Thank you all so much for taking the time to answer! I love the idea of the built in. That might be the best/cheapest solution for now. I'm posting a few shots from the back of the room so you can get a better idea of the entire space. I didn't prep the room, so it looks a bit cattywampus. It used to have a pool table in it and the man person that lives here thought the tv on the high shelf would be better for viewing while playing pool. Probably would have been if anyone ever played pool in there. So glad to see that thing go, but boy do I miss my laundry folding table. ;) After the kitchen is done (next week=yay!) I'm going to begin on this room starting with that corner area, some kind of window treatment for the sliders, new lighting (PO put ceiling fans in there 8( ) and paint for the entire great room. So, should I keep the depth? You'll notice that the shape of the space is squared off then moves into a triangle. Arcy, I'd still really love a gas fireplace in there. Not only for ambiance but warmth too. My only option would be propane however. Not out of the question some time in the future....See MoreFloof! Table decor!
Comments (15)No dining room here. Never wanted one. The house I grew up in had a dining room that was rarely used for dining. The table in it was just a handy place to clutter up with all sorts of stuff contributed by all family members. We kids did our homework there, Dad did his bookkeeping there, Mom folded laundry there. So it did have it's usefulness. The best use of the table was for playing cards and monopoly etc. Our house was the neighborhood kids/friends gathering place. Once all the clutter was removed, we could put 12 players around that table. Those were the good old days! Today's kitchen table. The center piece is metal and holds napkins and salt and pepper shakers. Most usually there is a pair of binoculars on it for handy bird watching while eating. I change the place mats weekly for variety. It is in view of the front door and other than the color of cloth and mats, it doesn't change.EDITED to add...I forgot, I do have another table, but it is not for eating. It is in what we call the 'big room'. The room added on to be just for enjoyment . No TV allowed! Listening to our collection of music, reading, doing jig saw puzzles, and game playing on the table or just quiet relaxation happens in this room. And always something on the table to amuse you if looking out the windows isn't enough. That is a cut glass bowl that was my Grandmothers. It holds a deck of cards and a couple 'mind' type puzzles for one to play with. A marble game and coasters are at hand if needed. The frog holds paper clips....See Morechloebud
