TruSlate or alternatives
Comments (7)Funny to see this pop back up! I have decided against TruSlate but our builder was asking me about it as it is being evaluated for another house he is building. Frankly, it is not much cheaper than real slate, and who knows if this system is time tested. Also, I was concerned (and so was he) about the quality of the slate actually being used. It did not seem worth it to me to use TruSlate when a real slate, 100 year proven roof, was only a few thousand more. The real market for TruSlate is for reroofs I think . . . it is much lighter than slate and doesn't require the bracing. I do know the DaVinci looks pretty good but I would worry about the newness of the product, how it would age, would it fade (they all do I think), would it curl, be discontinued, lawsuits, etc. We went through this process ourselves and decided to do an architectural shingle. We are building a high end house in a small town. Our neighborhood where we bought our lot is either cedar shake or architectural (or grand manor) shingle - no slate. I don't care for grand manor - think it looks strange. We have a two story house with a gable roof so the roof is not prominent. I personally am not offended by a nice architectural shingle (although we got great pressure from the architect to do a higher end roof). The slate was almost 100k, tile roof (i.e. low end Ludowici (which was very clunky and I didn't even like it) was 80k, Grand Manor was 48k, and architectural shingle was 18k . . . decided to either save the difference or spend it on a place I cared about, like my countertops :) Hope this helps!...See MoreTile placement around bay window
Comments (15)I like trimming out the window with similar trim used in the rest of the house and then tiling up to the trim....that way no raw edges of tiling will show. But I do not like the edges of tiles to show but some people do...either way works just select what YOU like the best unless you like your designers ideas more than your ideas as you will be living with this a long time and you do not want to be annoyed every time you look at the window. That said I would personally prefer Damiarain's pictured look....See MoreCreative alternative for broken toothbrush holder
Comments (13)I have been able to locate replacement toothbrush holders. This site has them, plus extensive information about the various ways they are installed (thin set, recessed, flat mount, mud set...) eclectic-ware.com However, I was thinking about NOT replacing it with another toothbrush holder. I mean, who wants their toothbrush right next to the toilet? I had thought about a chunky shelf, but am not sure whether wood goes with the more vintage look. Maybe I can find a shelf that has brackets that are about 4x4 or is 4" high without looking too chunky? Or maybe a little wallmounted storage container if I can find it....See MoreAmerich Quality Problems? Any suggested alternatives to the Turo?
Comments (5)I'm sorry Patricia, you're right, I was unclear about that part of my post. I went to a store, they ordered the tub, it was shipped by the factory to me through an independent shipping company. It arrived damaged - twice. Neither the store nor the factory will take responsibility for damage caused by the shipper, other than refunding our money. I am wondering if there are any retailers (other than Home Depot or Lowes) who will take responsibility for getting an undamaged tub delivered to us....See MoreMrs. P
