Lawmakers have 'agreement in principle' in border security talks Samue

tryingtounderstand

Maybe, just maybe shutdown will be avoided. A few days ago Nancy said that he will sup port or agree to the committees decision.

Congressional negotiators revealed Monday evening that they've reached "an agreement in principle" on border security funding and other issues that could avert a second partial government shutdown this year.

When asked if they had an agreement that President Trump would approve, Sen. Richard Shelby, R-Ala., the chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee, told reporters: "We think so. We hope so." Rep. Nita Lowey, D-N.Y., the chair of the House Appropriations Committee, declined to give details of the deal but said a final text could be released by Wednesday.

While I would like to think this will advert a shutdown I seem to remember that before the last shutdown there was an agreement and when it was sent to him he refused to sign. Made me think of a kid wagging his fingers in front of his face as saying Nah Nah.

I don't think we'll have a shutdown, but I think a CR is a more likely scenario as a next step, rather than agreement to this bill (as proposed tonight). I think it's time for Trump to move ahead with other avenues. If Trump wants to look at the long game, sequestration budget cuts return in January 2020 and there is 55 billion in non defense at risk then (71 billion in defense). Dems can decide then if 5.7 billion is worth the battle. Or, when and if DACA gets on the SCOTUS docket. I expect it will (likely in 2020) despite the fact that they chose to not fast track it.

I agree, Ann. Despite Democrats' best efforts to sabotage, move the goal posts, resist, obstruct and deal in bad faith, I think Trump will do a CR and avoid another partial shutdown.

The looming budget cuts which will affect Dems more is another inflection point which Trump can use to get more funding, meanwhile, more wall building continues.

Meanwhile, yes, take border building from front and center, focus on the economy and remind America loud and often, that we will never be a socialist country. There's just so much material to work with lately!

I think Trump will get more in September and on we go. Hopefully Congress will do some real work on immigration reform, enforcing e-Verify, getting rid of loopholes etc.

He would be a fool to force another shutdown but then again ........

A CR will be viewed almost as negatively as a veto . There is a lot of border security money in this bill. Walking away from all those billions in border security money sends a message on just how much he really cares about border security. Perfect 2020 talking points for Dems.

Here's the deal:

$1.375 billion for fencing and other physical barriers. 55 miles of new bollard fencing, with some restrictions on location based on community and environmental concerns.

$1.7 billion more for border security, including technology at ports of entry, more officers and humanitarian aid.

40,520 beds, a decrease of about 17 percent from current levels.

Now to see if Rush, Ann, Hannity, and Tucker approve.

By campaigning on the wall with no true expectation of winning and by being totally clueless about how Congress operates, trump did this all to himself. You who understand how government works should have known better than to believe his campaign promises. It's kind of silly to see how upset and angry it's made you now that you realize you're not getting everything you want. It's time to come down off your trump sugar-high and back to reality.

In the United States, a continuing resolution (often abbreviated to CR) is a type of appropriations legislation. An appropriations bill is a bill that appropriates (gives to, sets aside for) money to specific federal government departments, agencies, and programs. The money provides funding for operations, personnel, equipment, and activities. Regular appropriations bills are passed annually, with the funding they provide covering one fiscal year.

Mrskjun, maybe think about a business that uses vans to make deliveries.

In 2006, they needed delivery vans. And, they came to the same conclusion (need more vans) in 2013.

Now, in 2019, they conclude they have enough vehicles but some need to be replaced and a few need a major overhaul but they do not need additional ones. By modifying some of the business practices, they can handle additional business with the existing fleet size.

I feel the same way about the right hindering progress on:

- healthcare under Obama

- gun control under Obama

- environment (now removing all Obama's protections)

- leaving more debt for our children just to give a tax break to wealthy friends

Yeah, it's crazy. I hope he just does a CR, gets whatever barrier funding he can from other sources, uses our military to protect the border (and hopefully build barriers to protect themselves), and runs on this in the campaign (along with all the other issues Dems are readily handing him). He's tried like crazy to welcome negotiation, but he won't get good faith negotiation from the party that hates him so much they now want open borders (that's insane) just to spite him and don't even care about the ramifications of their spite. America has noticed and appreciated his willingness to negotiate. At this point, do what you can without Dems, move forward, and let the Dems run on all the things they think will deliver a win for them. If they self-destruct (and it sure looks possible), fine with me.

What did Pelosi' s daughter say about her.....something to the effect that she could slice your head off and you wouldn't even know you were bleeding.

I think Pelosi moving this to conference , as had long been regular order , was a brilliant move on her part. Removes leadership from the equation and allows for bipartisan solutions. Something she promised would happen.

Next to impossible for either the House or the Senate to vote against the solution leaving Trump between a rock and a hard place.

Good job Madame Speaker.

Trump put his people to negotiate, does he not trust them! They did their job with NAAFTA, and they will do their job in this instance. Yes, yes, I get it’s different circumstances, different politics and different people etc. But they are HIS people, HIS party and hopefully, they negotiate in good faith. This goes for both sides of the fence.

". I hope he just does a CR"

Trump would be crazy to veto this bipartisan bill and force a CR.....assuming they would even issue a CR . Trump can' t " do " a CR, Congress has to.

Even though he doesn't get all his wall money there are billions more in the Bill for border security. DHS gets a huge budget boost. If he vetoes the Bill he walks away from all that border security money just to get his wall. Heck it' s unlikely he can even spend all that barrier money by September, he hasn't even spent what he has.

Vetoing a bipartisan deal will not play well with the majority of Americans now or in 2020 . Better to take it and try to spin a win.

Thank you for explaining that, Chase. I've been wondering how Trump could resort to a CR. I didn't think a president had that much power--but some of our Trumpster posters evidently thought Trump did.

Admittedly, the Repub. dominated Senate is prone to bowing low to Trump's wishes, but even they can be pushed only so far.

And a CR just might be well beyond what they are willing to concede to Trump.

"something to the effect that she could slice your head off and you wouldn't even know you were bleeding"

Wow, that's something to aspire to! If one considers a brilliant move providing more incentives for more illegals to enter and be released (open up that border wide), not negotiate in good faith, and figuratively slice heads off, that's an interesting viewpoint. We'll see how America as a whole views the situation. I may be wrong, but my guess is America is sick of those kinds of bitter fights and many on the left are making a terribly wrong assumption that most of America wants a "get Trump no matter what it takes" approach (remember, he won the 2016 election). What a train wreck Dems will find themselves in if they misjudged America's sentiment and, instead, most really wanted to see the government begin to work together for the good of the country (and possibly even think Trump's a pretty reasonable guy that does have America's best interests in mind).

McConnell is saying the Dems moved off some of their demands and that this is a fair bipartisan solution..... as are most Republicans outside the Trump die hards. Will be interesting to see the final vote numbers.

One thing I have noticed of late is that more and more Republicans seem to be willing to critize Trump or at least his policies.

Trump really won't take no for an answer on the full funding on his wall. He'll accept this but he's already scheming of ways to take funds from other agencies. Mulvaney is looking for every penny. DoD is one target. Let's see how this goes over with those agencies and the Congressmen whose districts he's robbing.

I see you changed your hypocritcal post, and rather quickly.

Christians most certainly follow the New Testament and the words of Christ.

Christians also read and have reverence for the Old Testament.

God's instructions to "not misuse the name of the Lord your God" are words I take seriously.

It is obvious you do not; however, you are not the only person that can quote scripture that is applicable.

Dear Christians:

The name of your diety is *not* God. "God" is a generic term meaning "diety." In our Bibles, the word is capitalized to differentiate it from other references to "gods" that are not worshipped by the Hebrews and now, Christians.

Carry on.
