Dems Latest Stunt To Force Gov't Shutdown: Drastically Reduce ICE Beds

Becca Reese

The Democrats' latest attempt to force another government shutdown is focusing on limiting ICE beds, essentially calling for illegal aliens not to be detained, and thousands upon thousands of ICE detainees to be put back on the streets of America.

Democrat leftists and socialists are pressuring the party to defund ICE entirely, and allow illegals to flow freely into America, without fear of deportation. The number of beds Democrats are attempting to extort from Republicans would all but ensure that the vast majority of illegal aliens will never be arrested and detained by ICE and deported.

We are either a nation of laws, or we are not. It is crystal clear now. Democrats do not consider entering America illegally to be a crime. There is no such thing as a law-abiding illegal alien.

https://www.nytimes.com/2019/02/10/us/politics/trump-border-wall.html

WASHINGTON — Congressional efforts to reach a border security deal ahead of another government shutdown broke down on Sunday over Democratic demands to limit the detention of undocumented immigrants, as President Trump moved more troops to the border and prepared to rally supporters in Texas on Monday.

The 17 House and Senate negotiators had hoped to finalize a border security agreement on Monday, but hours before that deadline, communications had stopped, lawmakers and aides said.

Meantime, the Trump administration was moving on its own to fortify the southwestern border with thousands of active-duty military troops. The number of deployed troops on the Mexican border was set to exceed the high of 5,900 reached around the November elections, as about 3,700 active-duty troops were being sent to assist with the Department of Homeland Security’s border patrol efforts.

The impasse appears to center on Democratic demands for a limit on the number of unauthorized immigrants already in the country who could be detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers, according to aides familiar with the talks. Democrats say a cap of 16,500 beds in ICE detention centers would force the Trump administration to focus on detaining undocumented immigrants with criminal records instead of using indiscriminate sweeps that drag in otherwise law-abiding residents.

“For far too long, the Trump administration has been tearing communities apart with its cruel immigration policies,” Representative Lucille Roybal-Allard, Democrat of California and one of the negotiators, said on Sunday. “A cap on ICE detention beds will force the Trump administration to prioritize deportation for criminals and people who pose real security threats, not law-abiding immigrants who are contributing to our country.”

Republicans demanded an exception to the cap for criminals, according to an aide familiar with the negotiations. Democrats declined, saying their 16,500-bed cap left more than enough room for real criminals.

Yep. Work smarter, find and hold the people that should be held, not that dad that is just trying to provide for his family, is married to an American citizen and has two kids but came here illegally 10 years ago. He needs to be charged but not held in detention and shipped out on a bus while his lawyer was filing the paperwork.

Here is the Dem. argument--somewhat different than the beginning of the OP suggested:

". . . force the Trump administration to focus on detaining undocumented immigrants with criminal records instead of using indiscriminate sweeps that drag in otherwise law-abiding residents."

I will admit that Dems. are pushing for every advantage they can get as the deadline approaches, but that is because Trump has nothing but the untenable Wall to stand behind--and the majority of Americans have rejected that idea.

The longer Trump insists on his Wall, the more concessions the Dem. are going to win. Quit before you get further behind, Trump!

"otherwise law abiding" residents. They aren't law abiding (how many have fake IDs, drive without licenses and insurance?) and they aren't residents.

That would require a green card.

It's remarkable how the Left has convinced so many Americans that our country doesn't deserve borders and protection.

Just heard on TV this morning that 9 of 10 in ICE custody have criminal conviction other than just being here illegally. And more important, those in ICE custody are processed in less than 40 days, versus the 2 years pluss for those caught and released.

Why wouldn't you want those with convictions detained for processing?

Loonslake, my understanding is that the Dems want to restrict beds so that ICE focusses on people wth convictions rather than those without.

Dems are trying to prevent the trump administration from breaking up families. The POT white so-called Christian nationalism position is to deport them along with their families, even if they have American children. There is an inhumane component to a rigid law-and-order policy. That doesn't bother trumpers though.

What is it the Dems promised? They can walk and chew gum at the same time, and btw, why do we have to choose?

How about we take all of those detained illegals and bus them to Canada every time we don't have enough beds. How about Canada takes them in and pays for them to stay, get food, housing, medical care and education while America processes them? How about Canada absorbs them when they don't return for their hearings?

Becca , you need to pay better attention to my posts. I address politics and political processes, economic issues and foreign policy.....and most definitely Trump. However, never do I ever suggest what Americans should do when it comes to domestic policy, rascism, voter equalty etc.........not my place.

I was simply clarifying my understanding of the Democratic position. I indicated neither support nor lack of support for it. When I speak of immigration , for example birth right citizenship or amnesty, I voice my opinion as it relates to my country ........not yours.

If the illegal person hasn't committed a crime, there's nothing to fear from them, yet breaking up families meets your approval. What is your reasoning that ICE should hunt down and deport those who care for and provide for themselves and their families, even those with children who are American citizens? What could explain such heartlessness? If it's not fear, it must be hatred. What's behind the hatred?

Keeping illegal alien families together is neither a presidential duty nor the Mission of ICE.

Putting illegal alien families FIRST makes a mockery of American law and the right of the American people to live in a nation where criminals are inadmissible under any circumstances.

Politicians trying to protect illegal alien criminals from incarceration are unfit to serve in the offices they hold. No wonder Democrats are so eager to release their protected class of criminals into the American population.

Voting illegally is small potatoes for violent criminals protected by the open borders crowd.

Ask the dairy industry.

“Eighty percent of the Latino population out here in northwest Iowa is undocumented,” estimated one dairy farmer in the area who knows the Nunes family and often sees them while buying hay in nearby Rock Valley. “It would be great if we had enough unemployed Americans in northwest Iowa to milk the cows. But there’s just not. We have a very tight labor pool around here.” This person said the system was broken, leaving dairy farmers no choice. “I would love it if all my guys could be legal.”

They are very far apart.

In a letter sent to negotiators during the last round of
talks in January, the White House Office of Management and Budget
requested $4.2 billion for 52,000 beds, $798 million more than current
funding levels.

Democrats are proposing a cap of 16,500 detention beds.

Reading the stories of people from all over the world who are denied asylum makes you cry if you have a heart. Not the issue here though.

People have the right to ask for asylum by international law whether they understand that we are unlikely to help them or not no matter what their situation is. You can get asylum if you are a sports figure or a ballet dancer from a communist country. You usually cant if you are facing death squads back home. But you can try to save yourself. It is legal.

Why is that Trump isn't after the thousands upon thousands that have overstayed their visas...only after the ones that come through the southern border? They are just as illegal as the ones coming from the southern border...and probably just as "dangerous."

It is a FACT illegal immigrants are less apt to break the law than legal citizens....and how many of the mass murders have been done by undocumented immigrants?

If there are fewer beds perhaps there will be more consideration given to who will get such a bed, how long they will have it...I thought that the right was extremely concerned about making sure that those who non-citizens in our custody are handled with efficiency and in accordance to the law. We already incarcerate more than just about any other country in the world - and these are Americans I'm referring to! The jails and prisons in this country now serve as the primary place that holds the mentally ill in this nation, which began when the mental facilities in this country started being shut down due to the costs and a few high profile investigations by journalists exposed the facilities for the horrific places that they were and had been for decades. Jail/Prison isn't a place where the mentally ill are treated well and improve, they are warehoused in our correctional system along with those who have been charged with/convicted of one or more from a laundry list of crimes. This isn't good for our country and going to jail/prison is all but guaranteed to become a revolving door once the person has gone through the court system for the first time - instead we could be focusing on programs that give inmates a path to leaving incarceration ready to start work on the outside, with job training to keep them from slipping back into crime.

Instead of piling up on ICE beds, we should be looking for ways to help the young men and women in our jails/prisons. Streamline the process and develop standards for detaining/deporting, save the money to use on helping our fellow Americans, to enable them to help themselves in legit work options.

Well I'm on the 'right' and in the right when I say they should be prevented from entering in the first place.

I am 100% intolerant of illegals. I think they should be used to work the farms, rebuild the roads, like the chain gangs of old. Right now they get taxpayer paid health care, schooling, etc. I wouldn't give them anything but make them pay for their crime by making them work then send them back once they've paid the debt of all they cost the taxpayers plus the cost of sending them back.

They're already criminals when they cross the border if they're not authorized.

They use governent services that are meant for citizens and even given drivers' licenses in some states. It's ridiculous how Democrats will not only tolerate this but welcome it--all for votes and to destroy our country.

You'll never see one of their faces on the lapels of the pristine white suits.

NO, no grieving mother or father or husband or wife or children, and also I do not recall seeing one USA FLAG on those white suits, either. They sat on their hands and didn't applaud for honored guests, yet jumped up and hi fived themselves for being elected to Congress.

Instead, Democrats proudiy stand with non-citizen criminals, demanding THEY be set free!

Every bed Democrats can eliminate from ICE puts another criminal illegal alien back into an American community. Democrats no longer care about, nor work for the American people...and they prove it every day.

"Agreement in Principle" includes beds which Republicans did NOTHING authorize any increase for in years so DHS has been funding more beds by moving money around for ICE. Method used and available means no crisis in beds. Done and done.

[Instead, lawmakers agreed to adhere to levels, set by a number of detention beds, established in the previous budget. That would fund 40,520 beds, a decrease of about 17 percent from current levels, which Immigration and Customs Enforcement reached in
recent months only by surpassing its funding caps
.]

[Privately, Democratic aides admitted the provision could have no impact on the number of beds ICE assigned for detainees. There is nothing to prevent Trump administration officials from funding a greater number of slots in excess of the lower target number, and then securing congressional outlays to cover those expenses, as ICE officials have done routinely in recent years, the aides said.]

NYT 2/11/19

PS...The ever charming here call for this with a lofty "here, here": "I am 100% intolerant of illegals. I think they should be used to work
the farms, rebuild the roads, like the chain gangs of old."

That's the ticket...bring back the old Loosiana style prisons with guilty and innocent alike chained together being "lent out" to all the good ol' boys to work their farms and other businesses. The charmers here are just itching to get back to the gold old days.

There are inmates who volunteer during the fire season, to help with the shovel-type of tasks that are labor intensive but don't require special training in firefighting to do. But they're not chained to each other, that can be rather dangerous and I'm sure that tempers flare in high heat, hard work, they don't need to be any more dangerous by adding chains to connect the crew by the legs. Just because they're incarcerated doesn't mean they should be shoved into the blaze and off the damn mountainside...they're people you know? Criminals, but still human beings (if they're out doing fire crew work they're typically not high risk inmates who require constant walled-in supervised settings).

What farms should inmates work on and who gets to decide which ones go where? As bad as our correctional system is, it could always be worse (like jails in most South American countries...those are even more dangerous than jails here). We don't need to make the stay like they're at a Hilton resort, but there are certain minimum standards that all people should be given while they are in custody.
