Why is the ceiling only 7’, anyway? And by “interior,” do you mean there are no exterior walls except for the one with the garage on the other side? What’s that nice bright room that the bathroom is off of? Could a frosted glass door be installed to get that nice light?

What I mean by interior is the room sits deep in the interior of the house. No window. No walls that I could punch a window through that would expose the outside.

The wide angle shot is taken from the master bedroom. I like the frosted window in that door idea! Good thinking.

We have an interior bathroom with a frosted window in the door, and it makes such a difference in the feeling of the room to have that light coming in!

I like that tile. I think it's kind of cool. Is it original to the house? Cleaning and regrouting should help a lot, I think.

Glad you like the tile, lots of people do. Half of the bathroom is an add on from 3 years ago so it's not original to the house. I think it used to be part of a walk in closet! I have always loved the idea of an aqua blue in a bathroom. Once I get the tiles cleaned and some daylight in the room I will really be able to see the true color and undertone color of the tiles and be able to test out some colors. I will try your idea for sure. Thanks!

I like that tile a lot too. What about white penny tiles for the shower floor or white 2x2 mosaic tiles and you could use a light gray grout that matches the gray from the terrazzo (?) tile in the rest of the bathroom. Keeps it neutral but ties it together.

Are you saying you don't like the current mirror? I like the simplicity of one large mirror there.

My husband bought a very similar shower system for our bathroom remodel and loves it, but it is a bit clinical looking. However, we've had it for over a year and I hardly notice it anymore.

Is your vanity black? Or an espresso wood?

Are the Solatubes with lights approved for wet areas such as showers?

Do you need that door to the garage as a means of legal egress? Not sure of your full floorplan, but it is food for thought.

Taking a step back from the details, I really feel like so much would be accomplished if you solved the garage door issue. Either making it look somehow attractive, if it is necessary, or removing it. There are SO many choices in exterior doors, this could be done pretty easily.

I think the floor tile should clean up really nice. Address the door and adding the solartubes, you can get an idea for paint color. After that, I would embark on the shower rebuild if you think it really is necessary.

@crystalpea I like the mirror. I thought I could maybe add another someplace in the bathroom. The vanity is an espresso color. Good advice on the tile!

@apple_pie_order Yes, they are ok above a shower especially when you put the one with a fan in it in that location. My shower Solatube will house a fan too. Thanks for looking out.

There are no legal reasons for me to have the garage door. I have another one to access the garage from the house.

I like all of your ideas. I did not read the complete discussion but if it has not been mentioned, I suggest you move your TP holder as it is not a decorative element. A nice picture frame would look great in that location.

Don't replace door with total wall. Maybe use frosted glass bricks so light comes in? At least for half?

Do you plan on adding lighting above or on each side of the mirrors?

You could use a white Kohler or similar single piece shower pan instead of tile. (You said you wanted to keep it simple.) Also, if that door with the glass goes to the garage and you don't need it, good idea to close it up. Put some recessed shelves in there for towels, etc. No daylight will come in through it and who wants to see shadows of someone using the bathroom through a frosted glass window?? No. Just no. Love the solatube idea!! Good luck!

You can't see any shadows or movement through our frosted glass door -- it's kind of amazing, actually. Just lovely light.

I know you hate to door to the garage, but is there a benefit to keeping it? i.e. if you're out gardening or having a BBQ, it seems handy to be able to come in this way. Is this room used much now? i.e. is it the main bathroom people use from the living room or ? Sticking with my door-from-the-garage-is-ok theme, it makes me wonder if this room could be thought of as an well appointed mudroom or ? The shower could be the official dog-washing station! ;)

@girl_wonder The bathroom is attached to the master bedroom and it was actually turned into a wall today!! It was some kind of weird add on. The door just goes into the front of the garage (nowhere near the back yard. It would be very awkward for people to go through the bedroom to enter the back door. There is another doo to the garage that is near the back yard actually! I would actually love to have an official dog washing station down the line though!!

@momfromthenorth the door was covered up today! It looks so much better and the drywall isn't even painted yet!!

@momfromthenorth I will look into the shower pan idea. It's so weird how whoever did the showers decided to put ceramic tile on the bottom!!

@l pinkmountain that door goes into the garage. There is no daylight on the other side...just a big dark garage. It was covered today.

Is the tile terrazzo? If so, you might want to do a little research about how to clean and care for it. You won't want to use anything acidic - stick to a neutral or alkaline cleaner. In fact, you might just hire a pro to clean and polish it and then you maintain it.

Seems like ceramic tile would be very slippery for the bottom of a shower.

@kats737 All done for now! The after picture is with no light on. All coming from the solatube. Same exposure as before pic too. This is what i did.

-Covered up door to garage

-Moved HVAC vent out of center of ceiling and added a Solatube Skylight in it’s place
-Changed out all bulbs to 5000k daylight balance in order to match the light coming through Solatube .
-Had the tile professionally roto cleaned.

-Removed square exhaust fan

replaced with flush mount can light.

-Added can light in shower ceiling

-Primed walls and painted 3 coats of a bright warm white color- “cotton Fluff”

I'm not disgusted by your bathroom at all (wish mine was that size). A new shower floor (white-ish, non-slip) and a nice cupboard (that matches the vanity) or new thicker shelving will probably get you far. Framed mirrors and lighting. Enjoy your fresh tiles and grout (hard to tell from photo's but that must be heavenly, no more other people's dirt..)!
