Windows Design Dilemma

Window Replacement existing frame color.

I have replacement windows coming in a few weeks. We are going with a white Vinyl due to the issues we have had with the wood and moisture on our current windows. I am unsure of what to do with the existing frame work. We currently have all natural/golden oak trim and doors but we will be changing to white hopefully in a few years when we do floor and kitchen. I think it would look best to paint the existing frame white to match the windows and leave the trim oak for now. I am not painting the trim we will replace later to white. I am a little nervous about doing this project and I want to complete before our windows come so I don't have to worry about paint on the new window. Here is a pic of our window and you see why I need new ones. Everything inside the yellow line will be white and the trim will stay oak for now. I also have faux wood blinds that match the trim color. Any suggestions.

I would just wait until the windows are in. If they are vinyl, no paint is going to stick to them and one the interior sealant is fully cured, you can easily tape off to the wind and paint quite easily.

I agree to wait until the windows are installed. There are so many whites, you want to match the windows as good as possible.

tonton, the reason is that most vinyl windows are designed to fit inside the "pocket" of a full framed wood window. They cannot accept another window of the same size. Any attempt to attach a smaller vinyl window into an original one will be disastrous. The only exception would be a full framed wood unit that just has vinyl cladding on the exterior. By your description, you have a full vinyl single-hung, and it just cannot be done.

Right on awsdan. The new jamb liners do indeed have about 1/16" lips, at least on the inside edge. Have you taken one apart before? This lip does not seem to be holding the jambliner in though, as I can gently pry the lip out and the jambliner does not pop out. I think there are clips holding the jambliners in, and I have yet to determine how to release them. One suggestion was a tool for removing vinyl siding. My current frames are MW. I determined that the jamb jacks they referred to are basically screws, one in each side, that are used for squaring the frame. Now that I think of it, they forgot to send me the screws... A bit of additional info, I talked to a guy in the Jeld-Wen factory and was told that it is absolutely possible to do this. I guess I should have asked how!

I am not a fan of collapsing the frames because you almost always disturb the flashing and there is no way to fix it. This is especially critical if your home gets a lot of weather. My vote is for the second company. Just be sure they tie into your old flashing and use compatible materials (flashing and caulk). Follow the ASTM and AAMA Installation Masters guidelines and you wouldn't go wrong.

Do I understand your posting that the current window does have low-e? If that is the case, there is absolutely zero benefit in replacing the existing glass with an newer glass pack with low-e and/or argon. The cold draft that you feel off the window is not air leakage but is what we refer to as a convective loop. The warm air rises, looses its heat to the glass, cools, and sinks. That is the air movement that you are feeling. The best thing you could do would be to put a cellular or thermal blind in front of that window. You may tell you husband that he is wrong. Do it gently.

just paint the trim as long as your painting! now is the time. so what if you're replacing it in a few years. it will look better now if you paint it all white. And you won't have to worry about being careful while you paint around the trim.

just use the white base straight from the can. no need to have it tinted. I do that with my white for ceiling and trim work. Base white. use SW Pro Classic or BM Advance if that is real wood.

give all the trim a good sanding with 150 or 220, wipe and clean well. if you use a white primer, it will be a lot easier to paint. for ease, use the Zinsser oil base primer in the spray can. when dry (it dries fast) feel w/your hands for smoothness. u may need a quick sand w/a 220 paper. wipe clean. paint.

Thanks for the suggestions and help. I ended painting some before and after. I should have done it all before much easier but I kept changing my mind. Here is the finished look. Still waiting on blinds and now I need to do the door trim at least in this room. The thought of painting anymore trim right now makes me sick. So this is good for now.

painting trim is no fun at all... Looks nice though. Even with the stained base mouldings, its not uncommon these days to see the mix like that by design. I'd hit the door trim with white though.
