Can you show me your rose beds (or, where do you plant your roses
Comments (34)CI, TZ, SdlM all growing nicely now. I think this will be a good fragrance bed. I put Lion's rose in the back to add beauty and a good leafy background even though it isn't much on scent. I think if the base gets shaded by the others, it won't get disease. There's room to the right of Abe Darby for one more big rose. I think it's going to be Evelyn. Hopefully, it will work some magic for me. This is a good morning sun spot and gets shade in the hottest times of the day. My summer is a little hotter than Hoovb's but maybe it's close enough. I'm going to hope for the best. The only downside to this location is that it will take the full force of the Santa Ana wind from across the street. We are along the Santa Ana river channel and the wind blows strongly through the gap. It seems to be shifting later than Halloween now. I used to call it the Halloween Wind....See Moreshow off your pink roses (part i)
Comments (31)Hi florence, great to have you posting. And I'm glad you are enjoying these threads "showing off" our roses and getting us through the long, grey winter weather. Roses certainly can raise the spirits, can't they! Make sure you see our yellow and our red threads also--plus the stripey thread, and I see someone started a climber thread. I know you have some climbers you can add there, florence. Kate...See MoreShow off your newest roses for this season
Comments (32)Thanks Kate! I was very hesitant to get MW since I didn't really like the photos of it (color looks muddy to me, and the dark purple outer petals contrasting with lighter inner petals didn't appeal to me) , but kept hearing what a great rose it is and how it tolerates heat. In my heat it is a much brighter color, and it is amazing how it just keeps growing and blooming, at least so far in its first year. Lovely fragrance, and very thorny. So far my most impressive new rose (comparing against Pure Perfume, Abraham Darby, Evelyn, Sonia Rykiel, Princess Alexandra of Kent, Fabulous!, Jude the Obscure, Ann's Beautiful Daughter, Guy de Maupassant, First Crush, which are all new for me this year)....See MorePeggy Martin....
Comments (16)I'll admit Peggy M doesn't make anyone gasp at the beauty of the blooms, but I would suggest it has a place, not in every garden, but in enough that it's a valuable rose. We know it can survive just about anything and it's the best short fence climber I've ever seen. I think it would be beautiful covering the side of an out building or provide shade on a porch. She doesn't require pruning to bloom, and that is a plus for such a big climbing shrub. And, for those of us in cold zones, she's a pretty decent option. Some of the Canadian roses we depend on, like Wm. Baffin, don't have to-die-for gorgeous blooms, but they provide a massive wall of color. While the individual blooms are not exceptional, the entire bush as a whole is breathtaking. See Garden nut's photo for it's covering ability. Fruit Cat's Peggy paired with Happy Jack clematis, third pic down, is one of the most beautiful photos on these forums, in my opinion. It's all so personal and that makes our gardens personal as they should be....See MoreIngrida
