Central vacuum
Comments (17)I hated my central vac system! Hated the long thick hoses / tubes that you had to maneuver around to walk and vacuum. Previously with a regular upright vacuum, I hated the cording that I used to have to flip around to get to that area to vacuum. And I thought that with a central vac, no more cord! Well, no cord yes, but instead of that annoying 1/2" thick cord that got in the way, I had a massive 2-3" hose that was 10x more annoying than the cord! The head never had enough suction for carpet and it did not seem to get as clean as a regular upright. Plus storage of those 30 foot long hoses PLUS the vacuum heads was a huge storage problem for me! Now with all of these new improvements of the hide-a-hose and the opening you can just sweep into with your broom, I might have taken a second look. But if it were me, looking now, I'd try out the actual systems if you can in someone's home and see how they like their system. The custom and hybrid sounds the ONLY way to go. But I would still hate that huge hose - that part would be a deal breaker for me personally. The only other note of caution I can add with the older systems is that when I worked in the new homes industry with a couple of builders several years ago, they frequently had problems with the systems clogging up with things getting stuck in the walls. It was determined later (after expensive and destructive opening walls for the hose repair IN the walls), that the blockage was due to a combination of new carpet fibers and small toys or objects that children likely stuffed into the vacuum wall openings. When that happened, the entire system wouldn't work. A central vac was a liability and no longer an asset so they stopped putting them in. Maybe in an individual's home that wouldn't happen but with so many different cleaning crews and visitors, it was common then. I have not heard of that being mentioned lately so maybe with all of the hard floors instead of carpet, that this is not a problem these days. Just wanted to add that as something to watch for and to teach children not to play with. I came across another GW thread on this topic with some great details and specifics especially on the hide-a-hose system and them trying out several and their comments. Very timely. Link below. Comments (20)My dh was the one who initially wanted a FoodSaver. I really didn't think it was a necessary purchase--but I have since become a true convert! We got ours at least 6 years ago and it's still going strong (got the FoodSaver Gamesaver model from Bass Pro/Cabela's b/c we had a gift card). Not only is it great for buying meat in bulk and then using the bags to divide/store in smaller portions, but the canisters are great for things like refrigerating lettuce and even strawberries--both last waaay longer before wilting/softening. You can freeze liquid leftovers (like soup)--just freeze overnight first w/ a clip on top, then you can seal it and freeze longterm. I also like it for things like cooked ground meat--I usually date it and label it and throw it in the freezer (i.e., "1.5 lbs cooked ground chuck, 12/13/10"). It lasts a long time this way, and when I need a quick supper plan, I can just grab it, defrost and add taco seasoning or spaghetti sauce or...you get the idea. I do occasionally use it for marinating; it does speed up the time needed for this. There is a Quick Seal option (or something like that) that works well to reseal things like bags of fish sticks (blech--but my kids think they're great as an occasional special treat!) or pizza rolls, for example. Also, like joyce 6333, I use it for cereal bags and crackers. Much better than folding up and clipping w/ a clothes pin! So all in all, I definitely would recommend the higher end models. Also, I found that Sam's carries a bulk package of assorted size bags for a better deal. Good luck!...See MoreMiele T9802 Dryer checked out OK with Miele
Comments (22)Besides from the Normal (moisture sensing) cycle not working on a 100% synthetic load of gym clothes....Every other load (shirts, pants, shorts, towels, sheets, table cloths, napkins, jackets, etc...) come out flawlessly using Normal (moisture sensing). Does it annoy me that I have to use 45 Min Warm + gentle to dry synthetics? Yeah, a little. But, I think it is similar to the Miele washing machine quirks...Pre-Wash is labeled Heavy Wash, No soak option, after a cycle is complete, the drum does not tumble to "un-stick" clothes that are literally plastered to the stainless drum after a 1400rpm spin cycle, Cannot activate the drum light during a cycle, etc. etc.. My washer and dryer though, IMO, perform better than ANY OTHER make or model. As we know, or should know!!!, nothing is perfect. If Miele hadn't sent a Technician out, I would be very worried and upset, but since I was with the Tech the entire time during service...everything checked out. If this is a specific "problem/issue" with my T9802...then I'm just gonna have to deal with it, because I love this dryer!!! ;)...See MorePlease help me buy a vacuum cleaner!!
Comments (67)Omigosh, all your complaints about your Meile are just the opposite of my experience with them - although I don't have experience with the Costco model. The upward exhaust bugs me, too, if I get near it, but I like that it's not blowing across the floor moving dust bunnies before I can vacuum them. As far as awkwardness of the hose/handle, try lengthening or shortening the silver metal pieces and see if that makes it easier for you. I've had other canisters and my big complaint was that they'd tip on their sides at the drop of a hat, but I can say my meile has never, ever tipped. It is so easy to pull and flows easily around corners - just a tug on the hose releases it if it gets hung up before getting completely around a corner. One advantage to Costco shopping is they will let you return anything. If you can't make it work for you, take it back! Oops, just noticed this was a revived old thread. My response was for Jellytoast. Hopefully, it's resolved by now....See Morewaverly6
