Painting dresser .... suggestions
Comments (5)We just finished painting an entertainment center that was originally stained. The people on the paint forum generally recommend either Cabinet Coat paint (hard to find), BM Satin Impervo, or SW All-surface enamel. We used the BM paint and it came out pretty good. I wanted a white storage system for the playroom (similar to PBK), but since they were so expensive, we decided to try to paint our oak cabinet. DH didn't spend alot of time on it either, b/c we didn't care for it to be perfect (a. since we figured we'd be replacing it next year with the new TV standards, and its not in a room that is seen by guests). He used primer (a mix of what we had in the garage, some parts were painted in Kilz and then Zinnser), and then a small roller + brush for the rest. He sanded only between primer and paint, and used approx 2 coats but didn't wait much for the coats to dry. So basically, what I'm trying to say that even though he didn't do things by the book, it still turned out pretty good, even with a tough wood to paint (oak has all that grain that shows through the paint, my original reason for wanting to replace rather than attempt to paint). We have used Satin Impervo before for trim painting and DH has prefered it over semigloss latex. I once used the All Surface Enamel for outdoor rockers. I think it was harder to use than the impervo, but still good quality paint (it was recommended for outdoor use unlike the Impervo). HTHs!...See MorePainting over oiled oak finish
Comments (8)I did find a method online that allows the use of oil-based paint to do a crackle-type finish. It involves a layer of oil paint as a base coat, followed by a layer of water-based white glue, like Elmers. Then you go over it with a layer of milk-paint, followed by an oil-based glaze after it's dry. I like this idea as milk paint colors are usually nice historic looking colors, and there won't be as many to choose from so it will make the choice easier. That's where I have usually have the most trouble, and it will be easier to choose from 20 colors than from 1000 :-) I'm going to try a sample board first to make sure it will look the way I want it to. I have a piece of oiled oak in the basement that came from my son's old desk, I think it was a shelf that never got used. I'll treat that to the kind of cleaning you all recommended, and then test the painting technique on it. Now to choose a color and get started! Thanks all! Comments (25)Nosoccermom - thanks for posting the pretty beds. I'd love that last one with different finials. Looking at that one makes me realize I really need to check the ceiling height of the bedroom in the new house though - it's so tall! 1929Spanish and outsideplaying - that might be a good idea to take our bed with us and decide later once we get settled in. I'm just on a purging binge and trying to decide what we need to take since we have so much furniture to move and I've read about movers charging by the pound! Really the bed disassembled won't take up much space itself compared to the rest of the furniture, although it is heavy. Pinkmountain - I haven't showed him pictures yet but DH is actually onboard with getting a new bed and he likes the modern, country look that I like. I think he'd be fine with switching out just one piece, just not with spending so much to replace everything with similar quality furniture. He doesn't care for iron beds as much as I do but I think he would like any of the wood ones posted. Upholstered is an interesting idea too....See More4.5 " drawer pulls to update a bedroom oak dresser set
