Using copper nails to kill English Ivy

Warren McCarthy

I want to use nails to kill some of the remaining Ivy in this yard. Most of the Ivy vines are underground now, and there are a couple thick spots that look good for the copper nails. My question is, will in poison the Eucalyptus tree to the left just because the vines are entwined with it's roots? I will be careful to not sink any nails into any tree roots, but is this still a bad idea?
