Comments (10)I believe there is a brick kneewall at the front of your existing porch (see the mini-height of the guardrail), which is what @jck910 was asking about. So the top of the porch landing is lower than the existing front wall height. I share the opinion the stairs should face front. Hopefully enough room for the code required 36" landing out the door, then allowing the steps to stay within the setback of the house. I have shown a brick planter wall at the height of the "garrison" bumpout, but that is just for my fun, you would probably want just a guardrail. The main thing I want to advise is that there should be no patio right up against the house. There should be landscaping to soften and transition to the house wall. Also, I have come across many AHJs who do not allow actual "patios" in the front yard (they want to avoid BBQs and umbrellas and 6 person tables). They will allow a small bench area off of a sidewalk though (usually stating a maximum SF allowed)....See MoreHelp needed - fixture at top of stairs - how wide and style
Comments (6)It sounds like a semi-flush mount is the way to go. I like the options 2 and 3 above, hopefully they come in a nickel finish as the rest of the hardware is grey. As requested, here are some pics. The first is a picture of the current light. I measured 75" from the floor to the bottom of the light so I suspect it is hanging too low. The second is a shot from my bedroom door. The door in the photo is on the other side of the stair well and leads to a large attic space. You can just see part of the light at the top....See MorePrepping stairs for new hardwood, Need help
Comments (6)In general, risers should be 7" high and treads are 10" deep plus 1-1/4" overhang. You'll need to add the 1" thickness of your treads to each step, then calculate how to shim each one so they come within tolerance and don't vary more than 1/8" from one to the next. Open ended steps require treads with a return that overhangs the end by 1-1/4", just like the front overhang, like this: https://www.homedepot.com/p/Stair-Parts-1-in-x-11-1-2-in-Unfinished-Red-Oak-Tread-Reversible-Return-Plain-Cut-Thread-8503R-048-HD00L/202088466 You'll need to take into account that on the mid-landing and upper landing, you'll only be adding 3/4" instead of 1". To install, we usually start at the bottom and work up, riser, tread, riser, tread etc. that way its easier to get a perfect fit at the bottom and sides of each riser, while the riser overlaps the back of the tread below and the new tread above overlaps the riser below....See MoreGN Builders L.L.C
