Comments (12)Hmmm! You guys have some good points. I never thunk about that 2 cord weight. But then I don't know a Commanche P/U from an anchor chain. I found the following in Mark's Mechanical Engineers Handbook, 1952, (1 $/pound new). A cord =(128 ft³ cut & stacked) = 90ft³ solid wood. White Pine, Green, 3240lbs, 12% moisture, 2250 lbs Red Oak, Green, 5760lbs, 12% moisture, 3960 lbs so 2 cords could weigh up to 11,520 lbs. Wow! Assuming a P/U bed 6' X 8' the load would be 5.3 ft high loaded even along its length which would make it too heavy on the drivers so you'd have to pile it higher toward the front..... Wow Again! =========================================================================== I hauled dry cedar logs never over a ton net which gave me a GVW of about 4500 lbs. Legal! I checked weighed it once to calibrate my eyeballs for loading in the woods. I also divided the gross weight by 4 (=1125 lbs) and my tires were rated for 1500 lbs so the cops wouldn't gitme for an overload. The beefed up springs proved to be extremely stable. The logs were tied down 2 places with truckers rope and since I are a trucker I know how to do a secure tie down. The brakes were more than adequate for this GVW because I tested em out with a simulated panic stop to make sure. At the time I was given to understand that the Datsoon rear axle bearings were sized for way more than the load I put on em. Don't remember anymore how that was determined but it was considered. I did this in the California mountains with no trouble aytall. I geared down going downhill thereby keeping my brakes cool. etc etc. Did I do it right? Altho many big trucks use airbag suspensions I don't believe air shocks would be reliable for this application unless they were mounted directly between the axle and the frame. Most are mounted to welded-on struts which can bust off. They can leak or spring a leak. They have no lateral stability. Coil springs have no lateral stability. Leaf springs are better. Thick stiff ones are best....See MoreDWTS....Shocking, shocking, shocking
Comments (39)I, for one, liked the way that Maks was "touchy feely" with Kirstie. Why? Because when a woman is that age and overweight, especially when the woman is famous and used to be stunningly beautiful with a stunningly fabulous body, she would naturally have some issues with feeling a bit out of place or frumpy next to the professional female dancers and the young, thin, and cute celebrity dancers. Kirstie was doing better and better each and every week, and she was also losing weight and inches each and every week. To me, watching Maks be so "loving" towards her, it was like his confirmation to her that she should be proud of herself and her accomplishments and not feel inferior to anyone. It was an affirmation that she is still beautiful and sexy....See MoreQuotes 10 - 22 - 17

My favorite today is Graham Joyce. It always intrigues me how different British writers see things than American writers of the same time period....See MoreCursing in popular music by a certain artist, I'm shocked
Comments (52)Sorry, I'm in the camp of "words are tools" and "words matter." I think we should train up our kids in polite public speech, but not necessarily use an extreme amount of censorship as to what they listen to. I used to swear a lot, but then I realized it was simply not necessary and it demeaned something I really, really valued, which is the beauty and poetry of the spoken word. Its also a micro-aggression, not neutral. That's not to say that I am some kind of prude who wants to censor everyone, but too often a swear word is just tossed in to make the person sound "edgy." Some of the edgiest lyrics ever are not laced with swearing. I used to hate to see elementary age kids and early teens gyrating and imitating sexually suggestive dance moves like Madonna to "Papa don't preach, I'm keeping my baby" or "Billie Jean is not my lover, she's just a girl and she says I am the one, but the kid is not my son." Those aren't fun pop dance lyrics, just ask Puccini. All too soon these same kids would be pressured into sex without the tools to manage it, and some would end up as teen mothers in highly dysfunctional situations. Which came first, the chicken or the egg. I have no answer . . . forbidding artistic exploration of the issues is not the answer either. When I was a kid my Mom didn't like the way a lot of pop music glorified sex and drugs. I didn't listen to rock and roll much as a kid, I was into show tunes. One of my favorite songs was "I'm Just a Little Girl From Little Rock." which is from "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" and is a paean to being a kept woman. Our mothers often paled when I and my best friend sang and danced to it. We knew it was naughty though, and we didn't grow up with any desire to become hookers . . . so one has to consider context and extent. Some people are more susceptible to emulating what they hear or see than others. I had such a wide variety of tastes . . . certainly art can open the door to a negative path, but if you are resilient, you can develop your own taste based on your own values and not have to follow the taste and values of media personalities or music icons. To me its balance. I would never have taken LSD just because John Lennon wrote a funny song about it . . . My father swore sometimes, usually when he was fixing something, and I had to be taught that those words were impolite and not to be used against others. My mother once got mad at someone in traffic and called them an "SOB" which made me think sob was a bad word . . . and I kept asking her "Mom what's a sob?" She kept telling me "Never mind!" :) It took me a long time to figure out why it was impolite even to call someone a female dog as an insult, when they clearly were NOT a female dog. The whole thing didn't make any sense . . . The lasting effect listening to music and musical theater had on me was wanting to become a musician and dancer. Sadly I did not have enough talent, but I still use music in my teaching. It does have power, I would not pooh pooh its ability to influence the mind. But its complicated . . ....See MoreRelated Professionals
