February, 2019 Quilting/Sewing Goals
Comments (30)Bev2009, I'm impressed that you can keep track of all the sizes. Good for you! I have always wondered what size a piece of fabric should be when it's considered time to cut it down. Great looking bag, Valarie! When I retired I remember not wanting to answer or make phone calls, since there was so much of it on the job. I still don't like using the phone......unless it's family. :-) Theresa, It's always a good feeling to finish a quilt. This one seems to give a sense of calm. Good job! Where did those numbers come from? How do I turn it off? Never mind...I found it......the cat must have done it! I have the BOMs made, have a few purple Hanging Garden blocks made, have half of the Split 9-Patch top sewn together and have another row on the Orphan Row By Row. This is what I have so far. Only 3 rows, but making them fit together and not look real crazy has been fun. The top barn blocks and the bottom barn blocks were from 2 different BOMs that I didn't get the whole year completed. Trees from HSTs from another project, 3 1/2" strippy rails from a quilt-along, green flying geese in a pot is from a Bonnie Hunter mystery, and the list goes on. I am enjoying putting this together and using blocks that are already made. The new cat inspector needs training.........See MoreBOM February 2019.
Comments (29)As you know, my first HSTs did not come out so well. So this time I cut the squares a little bigger and that worked just fine. However, I didn't really look at the directions since I had done it once, and forgot that you need to mix up the squares. I put the one beige with all of one print and the other beige with all of the other prints. So I couldn't lay it out as designed. So I did what I could, instead of starting over. It is square, it's just the pic. And the second one, which is also square. I did this one correctly. :)...See MoreFragrant flowers for February, 2019! What do you have to show us?
Comments (12)Sabut, the Michelia lives in this room: It is a nook, off the kitchen. The window faces west, and directly across is an east facing window which looks onto a patio. Neither window is particularly bright because of trees, thus the lights. The two fixtures are for the benefit of a stephanotis and Arabian jasmine (Monrovia's 'Summer Soul'). The light bathing the room comes from two 300w equivalent LED daylight spectrum floodlights in the ceiling, which are on from 7AM to 11PM, or when I go to bed. To the left of the alba is a Michelia champaca, which I hope to use as an understock for blooming age champaca wood. I'm on the hunt for a tree on Maui to collect from. If I can't find one, I'll use it as understock for the alba. At the bottom of the picture you can see a few leaves of another alba which is getting busy, too. And at the extreme left are a few leaves of a dwarf Singapore Pink plumeria. Between the fan and the alba on the table are some small bottles. They are essential oils of Michelia champaca, Michelia x alba, alba leaf (an amazeballs fragrance in its own right), ylang-ylang, and Spanish jasmine (Jasminum grandiflorum). They are my "binkies" when the real deals aren't available. The essential oils help a lot. But there is a difference between sniffing the oil and sniffing the flower. It's like seeing an outfit on a mannequin, and seeing the outfit on a real person. There is a lack of 'soul'. But back to the question you posed about encouraging bloom. These plants haven't a clue what month it really is. To them, with 17 hour days, it's June!...See MoreLove in Bloom - February 2019
Comments (7)You sure do have a knack for growing the frilly, double pinks. Is that a sliver of edge variegation? Are the undersides of the leaves silver?...See Morealoebot
