What ideas can you give me for a long narrow master closet?
Comments (2)I have a narrow closet too. I currently have a wonderful 10x10 closet, so I am kind of worried about the odd shape in my new house. I carefully planned my closet on graph paper and on easycloset.com. I also taped everything on the floor. Remember that hanging takes up about 22 inches of space. You try to have 30 inches of walkway between things. I like shelves that are 14 inches deep, but shoes (women's especially) will fit on more like 12. I measured my shoes, my husband's shirts, etc. to find out what I needed. Do some of your single hang as "medium"--rod around 50 inches high. You should then put shelves above that for sweaters, etc. I am making my shelves all adjustable. In corners, it is best not to have hanging next to hanging, but I am doing it in one space. Just leave some room. Easycloset.com (or is it Easyclosets?) is a great site b/c it has a design tool and tells you where there are problems....See MoreDesign Ideas for Long, Narrow Room
Comments (17)We have lived for over 20 years in a house with a narrow LR very similar to yours (including the location of the fireplace). Over the years, we have shoved the furniture around many times to meet our changing needs. My sense of the best furniture items for a room this shape is: one not-too-wide couch (maybe an apartment width), 3-4 upholstered, but not-too-wide chairs, and 1-3 light weight chairs that can be relocated as needed (we have a rocking chair and a wooden chair). I like sectionals, but they aren't the friendliest for talking to others and they take up a lot of space for the amount of good seating that you get. (That is, could you really imagine more than 3 people sitting and talking comfortably on a small sectional? Contrast that with a shorter couch and two not too wide upholsterd chairs)....See Morecloset design ideas
Comments (8)I like using the ELFA closet systems from the Container Store. Ikea also now has closet organizers. I much prefer hinged doors, even if you need to place a bed a few more inches over to get the doors open. Much easier to organize and see all the contents when you can swing open all the doors....See MoreNarrow tall dresser? For master closet - closet organizer disct.
Comments (2)that was going to be my suggestion--a narrow shelf unit with baskets. There are lots of storage cubes w/ fabric boxes and other pullout stuff that are 12" wide. There are also 15" ones. But you could also look for the "drawer" containers/bins, and then have a simple bookcase made to hold them perfectly (bookcases aren't that expensive to have made). You lose space to the drawer box and drawer slide, so narrow stuff isn't that useful. One last idea: kitchen cabinets. Base cabinets are normally pretty deep--14"-- but sometimes you can find 15"- or 18"-deep base cabinets that are all drawers. This one from Ikea is 15" deep. http://www.ikea.com/ca/en/catalog/products/S19036706/ You'd need to come up with some sort of countertop, but a woodworker might be willing to make one with a routed edge. Either from paintable MDF, or by doing something a little fancier. If you want to go taller, you could stack them. (I thought Ikea's were boxes without built-in toekicks, but it looks like they stopped making them that way, You could just stack them w/ the toekick, or you could see about cutting the toekick away. Then there's also the idea of custom. It's worth looking into--it might not be as much as you think. Especially if you're willing to use a premade drawer setup of some sort. And especially if you don't want a fancy finish, etc. I'd check into this from some kitchen-cabinet maker. Also, you can't easily do drawers even with your shoulders. You can't see in them!...See MoreRonna Rosenberg
