Help! With cabinet and wall color for kitchen redo.

Have a nice size kitchen I am updating. New counters with Karis LG quartz and Blanco quartz sink in cinder. However kitchen is in middle of house does not get a lot of natural light (although looks into a room with a lot of light) light is mainly from over island and indirects . Surrounding 2 rooms get a lot of light, The 2 surrounding rooms are BM Sherwood Tan and whole house is SW extra white trim and is family room cabinetry. I am afraid cabinets repainted in SW extra white will be do “cold” in the kitchen and am struggling with wall paint color. I like the idea of black cabinets but I have a lot of cabinets. the middle pix is best representation with only island light on mid morning.

Comments (9)The current color works fine, but I understand your desire for a fresh look. So I'd consider a pale atmospheric blue with a little green in it to pull it closer to your golden neutrals - and because you have so little wall above your cabinets, I'd paint the ceiling, too. It would make a nice backdrop for your furniture as well. Look at Sherwin Wms. Water Squirt (7132) for a pretty pale blue with some green in it, or my go-to greenish blue, which is their Window Pane (6210). If that reads a little too green for you, look at Topsail (6217). Martin Senour has a lovely one called Alps (1086-D). Pratt & Lambert has two very fresh reflective ones called Snow Goose (23-1) and December Eve (23-2). B. Comments (4)IMO- While I agree with 82mainstreet about painting cabinets white and not expresso, I also believe you won't be happy unless the color combo pleases you. - First, what do you want to accomplish? Are you intending to live in the home for a long time? Or are you painting for resale? - If you are painting for resale, then classic white for your cabinets is your best choice. It has wider appeal. A future owner will find it easier to change the wall color than the cabinets. - If you are planning to stay in the house, you can be more personal in your color choices. - But be wary of fads, especially when painting cabinets. It is much easier to paint walls. From your photo, it looks like your cabinets are nicely finished wood. Personally, I wouldn't change that unless they are damaged. I would just update the wall color, but that is just my opinion. If you do paint the cabinets, don't be swayed by fad colors. I would still recommend white or maybe a pale cream. That way, if you get tired of your color combo in the future, you only have to change the walls to update the room. - Unless you are changing your appliances and flooring, very dark cabinets will probably make your kitchen feel overwhelmingly dark and warm. - Consider your lighting and how you want your kitchen to feel. Does your kitchen feel too warm or too cool when your work in it? - White will give your room a light and airy feel especially if paired with cool blues and greens. If that seems to make the room feel too cold, white or cream can be warmed up with a bright wall color like apricot, lime green or turquoise. Comments (35)This is Mr. kris_ma. She asked me to step in to answer some questions: eastbaymom: The vent hood is from Bosch. I think Kris got it on Overstock. The "micro-drawer" is a Microwave Drawer from Sharp that is in our Island. We really like having a microwave that isn't above the stove or taking counter space. The NeverMT is a kit that allows us to hook up the sink soap dispensers to large jugs of soap so that we don't have to refill them. And the hidden storage is an assignment that *I* got based on an idea that Kris picked up off this board (which is why she isn't allowed to frequent here any more :). The 3" trim board between the fridge and the over-fridge cabinet is installed on a piano hinge, so that it swings backwards to store large flat trays, placemats, etc. on top of the fridge without them being seen. sandbox5: Here's the story of the wired sound: Kris found some Cambridge Soundworks Ambience 80 speakers, which install in the ceiling. We ordered four of them (2 in the kitchen and 2 in the living room) and got permission from our contractor to run some speaker wire while the ceiling was torn off, and I ran wiring from where we wanted to speakers installed over to the location of our pantry, where we planned to install the sound equipment. We also had the electrician install an electrical outlet inside the cabinet. After the kitchen was finished, we cut holes in the ceiling to install and wire up the speakers. Inside the pantry, we ran the other end of the speaker wires into an electrical box with speaker terminals. For sound equipment, we got an Airport Express, which has a mode that allows it to stream music from iTunes. The hardest part was finding an amplifier that would fit inside the pantry and not generate too much heat. We ended up buying two small PylePCA3 amplitiers - one each for the kitchen and living room speakers. We put these in the pantry, along with the Airport Express and connected the audio out jack on the airport into the amplifiers (we had to use an RCA jack splitter to connect to both amps). We keep the amplifiers on, and can stream music from our laptops anywhere in the house. We also use a third party software program called Airfoil (for Macs only) that allows us to stream music from *any* application, not just iTunes. Comments (6)The floors and counters are great. The backsplash is not great and is the least expensive thing to change, so I agree with the other posters who suggested changing it. If the kitchen suits you as far as the cabinet style and layout, and the interiors are in good shape, then painting is a good idea. As other posters have mentioned, don't use a white-white as it won't go with the other elements in the room. Be sure to paint them in the recommended manner (lots of prep and using paint designed for this purpose), as a bad paint job would be much less attractive than what you have now. If you need something on that window because you're looking at the neighbors, just get something that fits the window better. A sheer cellular shade for example if you still want some light to get in. A patterned roman shade could add some color if you're OK with a window treatment that is either up or down with no middle ground....See MoreLala

Does this help at all....it is hard to photograph

5 years agoThank you Susie! ....I tend to agree. Here is pix with counter sample next to SW extra white family room cabinet ( but that room has good natural light)
When countertop goes in it Will be easier to evaluate the white for cabinets. And would love to do island dark ....BM deep space if go white cabinets. Putting a walnut top on cutout from kitchen to family rm to “warm it up” too.
