Using Travertine tiles for outside deck, any experience/opinions?
Comments (5)Thanks for the comments. We live in So Cal. I thought the travertine would look very nautral. I guess the point the designer was getting at, is the very apparent difference of the travertine on the outside, when it is adjacent to a door with the same travertine on the inside. I am sure other people have done this and it is not a problem, but I just have never heard of this concern before. If anyone has pictures of an inside/outside travertine or similar stone, I would love to hear from you. Thanks for your comments....See MoreAny experience with aluminum decking?
Comments (134)We had a Nexan lock-dry deck installed about 3 years ago, and we're happy with it, but it does require some maintenance. We chose the buckskin color, which we still like, but it does show dirt, and bits of green algae collect at the base of the railings certain times of year. We have the deck pressure washed 3-4 times per year. The decking itself does get hot--I'm guessing it's on account of something added to the powder coat paint, but it wasn't hot enough to bother my dog. I wouldn't want to walk on it barefoot. The railing does not get hot--it's got a different type of paint finish. If we had to do it again we'd have the railings mounted on the outside instead of on top of the deck, because with the top-of-deck mounting it's hard to get to the dirt that's beyond the railing. We chose a railing type without posts, and it was challenging for the contractor to miter the corners precisely--when we got our deck there was apparently no trim to deal with that issue-not sure if that has changed. We like the cables in place of balusters because they don't obstruct our view of the bird feeder. Because of the edge trim, water does tend to collect along the edges in spite of the slight slope, and I use a blower to get rid of it when it collects--otherwise it tends to leave dirt behind when it evaporates. Overall, we're quite happy with our Nexan aluminum-clad deck (wooden support system except for stairs), and we'd make most of the same choices again....See MoreAnyone have any experience w/Yardzen for landscape design? Opinions?
Comments (225)I read this whole thread before taking a risk on Yardzen. I have a pretty small project, where it's not cost effective to work through the entire design process with an expensive landscape architect. I thought the risks were minimal ... but my experience with Yardzen was terrible! So I wanted to circle back to this thread, even though it's pretty old and add my voice to the chorus above warning you to avoid Yardzen. It's not worth it. I spent quite a bit of time on the questionnaire, but got a first iteration back from Yardzen that was SUPER far from what I was looking for. The house was a color I specifically said I didn't want. The aesthetic was super contemporary, even though my house is craftsman style. It felt like the info I entered wasn't even considered. I added a bunch of feedback (more time wasted). I even met with a designer they offered to put me in touch with. After that virtual meeting, I felt better. But when my final design came back, I had so many weird design details in my drawings ...for example, counter seating facing a fence. You can always pay for them to do further iterations, but at this point, it felt like a bottomless pit. You can keep giving feedback, but there's a real disconnect between the client and the design team. The risks here are more than just your money; it's your time and energy as well....See MoreOpinions On/Experience with Everlast Advanced Composite Siding...
Comments (33)We had Everlast installed on our home 2 years ago. We decided between Everlast and Hardy, but had family who had Hardy and experienced the rot/failure issues. Also, the requirement to have all sides primed and painted, including cut sides leaves you vulnerable to the installer even more. We went with Everlast, and are so glad we did. Your product choice is very important, but equally, if not more important are your installers! We have had several very high wind (over 70 mph) and driving rain storms with no issues with rattle, air or water infiltration....See MoreUser
