For those who say a border wall would be too expensive...

socalnolympia

I don't know, maybe if there were fewer people on the roads there'd be less need for as many sound walls.

It’s a race between inflammatory rhetoric that causes division and the willful ignorance and tribalism going on. One or both will cause the end of the U.S.

I am afraid that meme, like Donnie's dream wall, is very dumb.

Sound, like human beings, goes up over and around walls.

But people want it and ignore the obvious.

“Walls are not a very effective solution,” said Robert Bernhard, vice president for research at the University of Notre Dame and an expert on noise control. Because the federal government pays for noise walls — and only noise walls — as part of highway expansion projects, he said, there is little incentive for researchers to keep testing and perfecting the alternatives.

How many times do you have to hear "MEXICO WILL PAY FOR THE WALL" as was promised?

Let he who got elected using this as one of his cons now make good on his con.

In addition to the great points above:

$6,000,000,000 for 3000 miles of sound walls

DOES NOT EQUATE TO

$40,000,000,000+ for an unknown number of miles of some sort of border barrier

For one thing, the plans for the sound walls had to be proposed and approved *before* they were budgeted for.

The 5.7 billion is just a down payment the cost will be may more then that. I can see spending money on border security, but something useful that will actually work.

$5.7 billion is supposedly for 234 miles (I think Ann provided that stat).

P.S. Cost is not the overriding issue. Obviously we could get that from the military budget in an instant.

I don’t believe there is anything in the proposal that includes the length of the addition wall Trump proposes.

"It’s a race between inflammatory rhetoric that causes division and the willful ignorance and tribalism going on. One or both will cause the end of the U.S."

You listed three things. Inflammatory rhetoric, willful ignorance, and tribalism.

Nothing "inflammatory" about promising to "faithfully execute" our laws. IT's a presidential duty. There is a legal way to enter the US. By newer estimates, we have as many as 30 million illegal aliens living on our soil. Only one president has ever tried to put a stop to the abuse of our system. President Donald Trump.

It's not "willful ignorance" that keeps Americans ignorant of the number of illegals living on our soil, the number of illegals responsible for murdering Americans, the number of illegals responsible for raping children and adults, and the number of illegals responsible for killing Americans on our highways while driving drunk. We can thank liberal politicians and our MSM for refusing to share or report information about the damage done to our country by illegal immigration.

As for "tribalism," we saw it up close. Leftists and the MSM were actively working to marginalize some young pro-life, white male Catholic high school students for "disrespecting" a fake Vietnam veteran.

Nathan Phillips, the name he goes by, banged his drum in their faces, and claimed they were the aggressors. In his story, he was trying to diffuse a situation. Nothing like banging a drum in your target's face to "diffuse" a situation.

That story has a familiar ring, as a few years ago he claimed male college students "called him over" for the purpose of harassing him.

So glad the school is thinking about a lawsuit against multiple entities for their vile comments on social media.

Talk about false equivalencies!

A border wall running through a sensitive environment which will suffer further damage from having roads constructed to bring in building materials, cranes, construction workers versus walls erected on the side of existing freeways.

Existing freeways? Many of those homes came well before the freeways. And our government took their land to build those freeways. By far, more people have lost their homes and land to gov't seizure for infrastructure than will for a couple hundred miles of border fence.

The comparison is sound wall to border wall -- freeways have nothing to do with the border wall.

Dunno, someone with a good ladder or grappling hooks can easily get over those sound barrier walls.

The wall isn't going to prevent healthcare expenditures, especially considering more than half of all undocumented immigrants are visa overstays. And the wall will absolutely not stop everyone. 300+ people tunneled under in the last few days.

Nobody said "it will stop everyone". You know that.

Yes, but how many it will stop ties into your figures on how much we'd save on healthcare. You can't compare the 11 billion to the cost of building and maintaining the wall, as it would only be a small fraction of that.
