Furniture Design Dilemma home office

Two Desk Office

Hi all!

We have a 14x12 office that we need to decorate. Currently we have one glass desk and one wood desk with the hutch up against the wall with the window. My husband and I both work from home so sound is an issue. We also have a few dozen books we would like to keep And our diplomas are shown there. I would like any ideas on how to place the desks and decorate to make it look open and help minimize sound.

Any advise? I am considering putting the desk on opposite corners of the room. Does anybody know if that will help?

What is the source of the sound? It's a small room so things like phone calls are going to be overheard, there is no help for that other than one person leaves the room.

If the sound is coming from music, videos, etc then headphones are a good solution.

If the sound is the incidental clicking of keyboards as people type and the shuffling of papers then headphones are a good solution to that too lol.

You could run a bookcase corner to corner on the window wall at desk height--baskets or file boxes for one shelf, books on the other. Then place your desks on the opposite walls so that you each have a work station with bulletin board, etc. The Billy bookcase system at Ikea with corner pieces would work well in your room--smooth desktop space all around the perimeter with each of you at a station on opposite walls.Imagine two works stations like this where corner wraps around the back wall to a twin setup like this one.

Another possibility is to divide the space with a tall bookcase down the middle as a divider the way people sometimes use bookcases as dividers to separate living areas.

As far as noise goes, maybe there are cubicle systems you can hack with soundproofing.

Adding to my comment above with 2 desks facing each other ..... I'm thinking if you place the desks as a grouping ... at an angle with the corner as in the pic, (creating a triangle) desks and walls corner ...between both windows, but moved toward center of the room, the space might work for you. You will have your backs to the other walls and not any windows. Kinda catty-corner to the room corner.

Using a round table for a home office desk?

I am in the same position. I can not decide if I should get a round or rectangle desk. I want a glamourous "cloffice." I am looking at these two desks. I have attached pictures of the space. I have a bookshelf that is a weathered greenish color and white bookcase with my bags. The TV is my security system, but is a Samsung the frame so it also is "art." I can't figure out if a round table wit h2 chairs under the lighting fixture is functional/ office looking. I was thinking of making an accent wall where the window is. The other furniture is just in there for storage. Any suggestions would be great. Unfortunately, in order to have the blank wall to your back it causes you to have a weird position relative to the door into the room. There's a reason most offices are set up to have the desk facing the door - it's because it looks better and some people are uncomfortable not facing the door. I assume you want to have a blank wall behind you for Zoom calls. If this is the only position in the room that suits that requirement I guess you're stuck. If it were me I would put the desk where I want it and buy a screen for the Zoom background. As to whether you should have an "L" shaped desk, if that is the most functional configuration for you, then yes. The other option is to have a desk with a credenza behind it. If you're working in this space all day then function should come before form.

Wow, so excited to see such good and varied inputs on my request! Thanks @Flo Mangan - I am now certainly going for a ladder shelf for the corner. I am not sure of moving the desk away from its existing place for precisely the reasons @functionthenlook mentioned - my desk job can sometimes result in 8-9 hours, and I do plenty of video calls throughout the day. So not only is it nice for me to have a view (which BTW Flo is right, it is limited since the windows are a bit above my eye level (photo of the view below)) but it is also pleasant to have light on my face. Further, the remaining space in the room comes in handy when the occasional extra guests stay over and the sofa beds need to be pulled out. Thanks everyone for all the rug options - this weekend is going to be (window) shopping weekend :)

Rooms showing how to divide a room with a bookcase to create two zones. (These aren't offices, but you get the idea.) This creates separate spaces, and gives you storage for books and files.

What's to the right of the window and the perpendicular wall? I have a similar size "office" that is my desk area (where the teen is sitting) and also another desk for the kids' homework/computer. I'm attaching pictures so you can visualize placement - NOT as an example of recommended decorating style (I am fully aware that it is currently a big mess). We moved everything around a few months ago and I love this new layout.
