Oh errant, finding cloths is a MAJOR challenge! And my DD's dining room table is the same width! She inherited my late MIL's cloth (I got the table, she got the cloth?), so that's one that fits. I normally do not have any leaves in mine and that makes it almost square - 58 x 56. I finally found a 90" square Irish linen damask cloth on eBay and that's great for when there are only 5 of us - a bit tight but doable. At Christmas when there are 6, I need to put one leaf in the table (it has FIVE leaves, all about 30" wide EACH!! and a specially made rack to hold them in the hall closet). I finally found a wide, long cloth on eBay and it was sold to me at a significant price as "flawless". After much argument with the seller, she agreed to drop-ship the cloth to the laundry in Wisconsin which still hand does cloths like these and puts them on rollers. When it arrived (before they touched it other to unpack it and inspect it), it had a dime-size hole and two thin spots. The seller said the laundry did it (they had not yet laundered it!) and eBay and PayPal sided with her as they will not guarantee things that are shipped to a 3rd party. I'm a major eBay buyer - first time I had heard of that! Fortunately this wonderful place (The Laundry at Linens Ltd) does superb hand mending and did a gorgeous job. They felt so badly for me, they did not charge me for the mending, just the laundering and shipping. When these two are gone, I'm out of luck and back to placemats (and of course, the leaves don't match the finish on the table due to light and age). When I was in Belfast several years ago, I went to Ferguson's and took with me a napkin from the lovely cloth my mother bought me 50 years ago for my linen trousseau, and tried to special order a cloth for this table. First of all, they no longer made that grade of damask - nicer than "double damask", and they no longer have the looms to make cloths that wide. It's a major problem for stately homes in the UK - even for Buckingham Palace - as the antique cloths are wearing out after 100 yrs of use and mending. But Ferguson's said making new looms would be cost prohibitive and the market for such a slim one. End of an era...

I think your best bet would be a very narrow table against the wall, with a couple of chairs. I’d do some searches like ‘eating table small room’ ... ‘eating area small apartment’ ... etc. Apartment Therapy might have some helpful articles, too. I like your thinking ... wanting to turn a challenging space into something usable. My first apartment was a “studio apartment” — I had only a tiny corner in the living room for an eating area. No window, just looking at an ugly wall. I think it could be a nice, charming space. And yes, I think a bistro set would work fine, too. Once you get whatever you decide, then see how/where a reading chair might fit in.

Those fixtures are very narrow and are not going to provide much light. To make a statement you might need as many as 5. See image bel;ow. Perhaps a fixture like this but longer would make a better statement?????

I chose to have my dining room table made in a custom 38" width because my room is narrow. It's 84" long but extends to 116" for special occasions. I don't think the narrow width looks odd, but from a practical perspective what you lose is space in the middle for things like serving dishes, platters and decorations. I don't think 2" will matter much either way. But if you have room for the 45" I'd personally be inclined to go with the wider width. How wide is your room?
