Need design ideas! How to expand a galley kitchen
Hello!
We just purchased a home and are looking to expand the existing galley kitchen. The back entry goes right into the small kitchen. It has a peninsula currently, but we would like to expand it a bit into the dining room, as we don't require a huge dining area and we find that everyone hangs in the kitchen, and we have loved entertaining there at islands in previous homes. Below is a pic of the current floor plan and what we would like to accomplish with this space:
- See kids playing in living room from kitchen
- Bar area attached to kitchen that could seat at least 2 people for entertaining (i.e. bigger peninsula or ideally big island)
- Bigger space to move throughout to accommodate 3 young children and 2 adults
- Small area (i.e. could be hooks/bench/etc.) for kids to take off/hang jackets. Would be great if this would be by the door, but that might not be possible without moving major appliances/plumbing
- Have a decent amount of storage space
- Keep back as is - window is pretty low (30 in) and is brick so changing this would be difficult/$$
It may even be a small change that can accomplish this, but wondering if there is an obvious solution as this layout seems pretty standard.

Comments (6)It's a little difficult to read...how far into the breezeway are you envisioning the kitchen will extend? It might be helpful if you could repost w/the "new" dimensions highlighted so we know what space is available. Do you anticipate the kitchen becoming a 3 or 4 person kitchen in the future? It looks like your kitchen is only 10' wide...is this correct? It may be difficult to get an island in that narrow a kitchen. You need... Wall run of cabinets = 25.25" (24" cabinets + 1.25" counter overhang) Aisle b/w island and wall run = 42" Island w/15" overhang = 40.25" Total used so far = 107.5" Total Width Available = 120" Leaves just 12.5" behind the island for an aisle. And, with mudroom right there, most likely there will be a bit of traffic. Even if you reduced the aisle to 36" (not a good idea for a multi-cook kitchen), you would still have only 18.5" behind the island. You really need at least 36", preferably 48" for someone to walk behind someone sitting at the island. Perhaps I'm misunderstanding you...but this is how I'm seeing it right now. Now, if you are taking a significant amount of room from the breezeway for the kitchen, perhaps the island could be rotated approx 90o and be placed in the "new" part of the kitchen. Without more information about what space you plan on using, I'm not sure how much we can help you. BTW...my kitchen was 11'1" wide and the consensus on the Forum was that it was too narrow for an island w/seating. I ended up going w/galley w/short (2' & 3') peninsula extensions on each end of one wall. Comments (4)I applaud all the detail you provided. That said, the measurements don't really make sense? What we really need is (for instance) - the entire length of the sink wall labeled in sections - length from peninsula to window, the window, length from window to window, second window, length from second window to corner. Does that make sense? And the pantry side - it doesn't say how long the pantry is, just that the door next to it is 41". We need both numbers. More specifics on numbers and not a general number for the whole wall. You also need to think about changing the fridge placement. There is tons of room on the (current) stove wall for it and then you could come up with a handy way to store shoes/dog bowls. And it the space actually 10' wide, or is that an estimate? Comments (31)Carolina Kitchen and Bath - the trash is not next to the range. There is a cabinet between the range and the window. The trash is under the sink. The distance between the wall and island is supposedly 30 inches. As there are other doorways in our home that are this wide (and some smaller) this seemed OK to us. 5 years agoIf you can move the plumbing and gas, and you're willing to give up a table and eat on the island, you might be able to work around the low windows. By wrapping the support post on the left, you can make the kitchen long enough to have an island to seat 5. At 20' deep, with 42" work aisle, and 42" deep island, you should have 4' for traffic behind the island. This would be a tight fit, especially with the fridge and sink back-to-back, but it has everything on your list.
When my kids were young, I had a small work table in the middle of the kitchen, and we ate at the DR table in the next room. After the kids grew up, we widened the door between the kitchen and DR, and switched the small work table for a 3x5 island/work table, which seats 4; 2 (or 3, when one is a small child) on a bench on the long side, and 1 on each short side, on swing-out seats. My grown DD and her family of 4 prefer to eat at the island. The youngest is still using a high chair, but he'll be on the bench soon enough. We made the DR table more accessible by widening the door way, and it feels more open and spacious, but they like being in the kitchen.Meghan Joseph thanked mama goose_gw zn6OHcluedin

5 years agoWithout pictures it is difficult to offer much advice about the peninsula. Since the drawing indicates an overhang already, i assume there are half depth cabinets there? Post a picture and you will get better responses. Depends on whether you need new counters too.
I like the Candice Olsen design (first) and Jasmine Hidden Potential ( second) below.
