Do I need to add more to compost pile?
Comments (3)If you have a lot of waste now & want to reduce the volume of it keep a hot pile going for as long as you have the energy for it or as long as the weather allows comfortable gardening. If you have more space than energy, just add layers. When I have a lot of material I prefer to add to the sides to build a long pile keeping it at least 4' wide & tall by however long you have materials to build it. Building a pile wider than 5-6' makes it too much work to turn & the outer parts don't actively compost anyway. If you build your long pile you can turn it all to the left pulling middles out & the outer parts inside the pile. Then your next turn is to the right & so on. It's a great workout to turn compost piles & a pitchfork helps. I've used a hoe as well sometimes after at least 5 turns or so it gets easier because the materials are smaller. Either way, turn left & leave it for a few days or a week, then turn it right the next time. If it doesn't keep heating after a turn or adding moisture you'll need to add more greens in whatever form you have available. It seems like 100% leaves are slow to compost, but if you've shredded them & mix with the green grass clippings it speeds up. Use what you have around to cover it like a tarp, upside down old carpet, wet cardboard, feed sacks, or burlap bags. Again it's either energy, time or space that limits your composting projects....See MoreHow can I add more privacy to this fence
Comments (7)Well my Carefree Wonders were 2 years old last year so this year they are on their 3rd year in that location and last year they were getting as high as the lattice by the end of last summer but they seemed to have to be staked in the ground as they started to lean or slip open with any kinda rain. My Knockouts seem to hold themselves up better.. Love the Carefree Wonders flower though.. The Carefree Wonders get morning shade from the fence and afternoon sun. I was looking for more privacy by the patio where the 6 foot fence is. Something that goes to 6 ft is fine.. I might want to carry some of the pink roses down the post and rail end also but more towards the patio I wanted more privacy..We had to move our Susan or Ann Magnolia bush last year so we choose to put it at the end of the simi private fence and are planning to redo the flower bed there to incoporate that bush into the bed and making it alittle wider out...We thought of looking into once of those patio arbor/pagoda things that you can have a patio with chairs under off our now patio in front of the fountain but not sure that will be in this years budget. As for the neighbors they don't plant much and rarely outside. So privacy 6 foot or so by the fence is best.....See MoreHow can I add a bit more curb appeal?
Comments (23)Ha ha! Want to know something funny? When I first saw the yellow house, I thought how nice and refreshing those rich colors looked, then I read the post. So, obviously, that look is not for you. Based on what you have told us, you are, er, conservative (doesn't have to be boring), and a bit more traditional. That said, you seem to be dismissing the advice to repaint the front door out of hand, but IMO that will give you The Most Impact, and for the least $$! Please reconsider. A pale blue or gray that plays off the white and the green colors while do much to brighten the entryway. Let's talk about how to hide that hose. You can either a) remove it when not in use (never gonna happen) or b) replace the hose with one that matches the paint color of the house or c) move the spigot to the driveway side, this being the most obvious permanent solution but also the most expensive, possibly necessitating tearing up the front walkway and replacing it with either new concrete or pavers. AND you could landscape. Landscaping is a process that involves a few key steps: defining your needs and setting your prioritites (as with all house-related projects) and, next, choosing a style or theme, based on your personal likes/dislikes. Before we go there, when it comes to specific plant suggestions, do you know what zone you are in? That will determine what plant material is hardy to your area, if you choose to limit yourself to (mostly) hardy plants. How is the drainage, since you will be planting close to the house, how and where the water goes is especially important information. What direction does the house face? That will determine how much sun or shade the area gets. Finally, ask yourself what is the mood you want to create? Do you have any inspiration pics? We need to know what you envision in the Big Picture. Then we can help you reach that goal....See MoreSmall kitchen / need storage! Add more cabinets or leave it more open?
Comments (20)Update: it's done! I love how it turned out. Ikea didn't carry the same cabinets that we used on the other side of the kitchen so we went with plain white and matched the handles. The kitchen somehow feels bigger now! We get our new marble quartz counters next week. Exciting. The next project is -- should I put a chalkboard or whiteboard or something on the white fridge panel? It feels like it could use some of my kids' artwork or something homey and creative...See Moresloedjinn
