Batman collection into the bedroom

Kendra Willow

I need help! My husband has a lot of Batman collectibles! Statues, figures, all sorts of stuff. And I need some creative ways to decorate with them in the bedroom. I honestly wish I didn’t have to have them but I can’t let him just keep the things important to him in storage forever. The bedroom seems like the best place since we don’t have an option for a man cave...

many tips? I want it to stay classy!! Not like a teens room

Some pictires and a floor plan with dimensions would help. I have a collection of dog stuff and have a small sitting area off my bedroom where the dog sleeps. I've tried to keep the collection in that area. Shelving and a glass cabinet helps do that.

My husband is sleeping so I'll add pictures later

Is there a furniture store closer to where you live that sells Hooker Furniture (even though they don't have that specific line in stock)? You might want to ask them if they can order a piece for you at no obligation.

I need to find something for my boys bedroom. I found the same set on the Costco website. I would like to ask the original poster (kylex) if you purchased this set and if you are happy with it. From the descrption, it looks like good quality (solid birch, kiln dried, dovetailed drawers). The price is very reasonable: $899 for the 3pc set. Here is a link that might be useful:

Thank you all very much. I've been planning this room for 6+ years. It's in an addition that we had framed in 2008, above a gathering room that I've posted about before. We had to break through the old roof line, necessitating the short hallway/vestibule that you'll see in a couple of the pics. The crew who was framing didn't exactly share my vision for the storage spaces tucked under the eaves and in the corners, so I've had to rework some of their "No one will ever see this, or if they do we'll be long gone" building techniques. I commented on another thread that before my DD & SIL took over the room, I spent several sunny afternoons sitting in the rocking chair, admiring the tree and enjoying the feeling of accomplishment. The newlyweds are very happy up there, in their own little world. :)

-doesn't look too contemporary 'cause Ming legs, bone hardware -not too fussy-not polished, inlay, etc -better price point -I got 2 dark nightstands(after years of Craigslist searching I must add)-I love them. No, not Barbara Barry for Baker Furniture..but nice enough. https://www.anthropologie.com/shop/tanah-three-drawer-dresser?color=020&quantity=1&size=S&type=REGULAR https://www.anthropologie.com/shop/tanah-nightstand?category=furniture-nightstands&color=020 shipping is the same no matters how many items you buy As for the sizes-yep, Room and Board is great with sizes, customization and all..never bought, just heard so..

Sometimes it is just time to let things go or as mentioned a nice glass cabinet in one space in the room.

Absolutely no to batman figurines in the bedroom. If his collection is worth anything, then sell it. If it's not, then find a good way to let them go. At the most keep a couple favorites and put them in the office of your home (if you have one) or on a hallway table. And then move on from the rest.

    Not a Pro.

I think a glass case display would be great. Maybe a corner one on his side of the bed. They get less dusty behind glass. There are some modern glass display cases that would look great.

I wish you would post your room and get some decorating help for this master bedroom. I would love to see how superheros can be incorporated into the room, yet keep it a style you can live with.

Don’t despair! I think @Rawketgirl’s display case example is perfect. How big a collection does your husband have? Maybe he could prune the collection as mentioned above. I think the key is keeping them grouped so they become the design. Below are some photos of how others display their collections...

collections of anything are useless and without the power to "wow" unless they are displayed as a collection. Any one, or two items all by themselves have no show value.

If it is a collection that he must have, you could consider doing something from Ikea. Look at something with glass from the Billy collection.

I have a friend who, as a grown man, collected toys of all sorts. He collected books, albums, and a few other things. There came a time when he had to part with his toys and he took them to the dump and trashed them, mostly. He was emotionally invested of them and this was his way of letting them pass through his life. He handed to me a box of some of them because we were having grandchildren then. Those old ones from the late 20th century are so much better made than are these new ones that my grandson got in this decade. Todays toys are pure junk compared to what they were then.

He is almost 70 now and he is in bad health. Still, he has some collections. He used the Ikea bookcases to house it all and he chose the glass fronts. The way they are put up makes them look as if they belong there.

If it is worthy enough to you to keep, keep it well. Otherwise, it is just a bunch of junk.

It also looses much value if you hide it away in a private area.

The narrow shelves could go up in a more public area such as a hallway.

With nice shelving, you can elevate the most humble of collections..

If you accept him, this is who he is.

Some men never get over their toys, and some people just love building a collection.

I have a collection of coffee mugs that really still make me smile. I collected them from yard sales and all manner of various times and places. If you take one or two of them and set them out, they have no impact. But, when you see the full collection displayed they are impressive.

I had way too many of them to display well, so I got rid of some of them.

Now they are all in one of those Ikea shelving systems and they are in a hallway. It makes me smile everytime I walk by. These are from a different era. Most of these types of things that are circulating now are pretty much not worth collecting.

Mine are from as diverse origins as defunct airlines, Las Vegas casinos that are no more, obscure electric cooperatives in Texas, the California raisins, George Bush, diners that no longer are in business and some Garfield in German. I don't collect cute little things with pretty flowers or things like that. I have an eclectic collection. It was fun, but I have not added anything in a number of years.

I also have a smaller collection of promotional glasses before everything went to throw away plastic or to-go cups. These are real glass. When is the last time you saw real glass promotional items? Some of these characters on these glasses are not even known by the children today.

A collection is not worth keeping unless you keep it where it can be appreciated as a collection.

You can have a collection or a bunch of cheap plastic toys.

Agreed about the glass display cabinet for putting the collection in the bedroom. I'd also say that if there's additional stuff that does not fit in the display cabinet, then it doesn't get to be in the bedroom. I don't know the nature of the collecting (like if it's borderline hoarding, which can sometimes happen with merchandise collecting), but I'd still put limits on it so it doesn't overrun your bedroom/house.

Does he have an office of his own? Is there a TV den? My husband has a small collection of Lord of the Rings stuff (fits on a single shelf in a bookcase) and that stays in his office, and we have two larger, high quality figurines of video game villains (gifts from friends) that grace our TV den. No nerd stuff in the bedroom.

yes I think collections are borderline hoarding. I'm guilty. Just as a side note though, I'm 65 and bought my first dog figurines at a garage sale when I was 12. They were the start of my collection. The Great Dane light on the dresser beside my bed is a light that was on top of our TV growing up. Others were cheap and small souvenirs on travels. There is a story for a lot of them. Good memories. Here's what I did with my dog collection in our bedroom. The white shelving was in the house but my husband added the shelves above the windows. He is going to add crown molding, still a work in progress. Shelving allows you to move things around, add and subtract at any time. Since this area is where the dog sleeps it just seemed natural to place my collection in the DOG room. It was in my office in our previous home. I would prefer not to have a batman collection in my bedroom.

Collections are only hoarding if you can't take care of what you collect, and it impinges negatively on your life.....If you and he can compromise on a display solution, that would be ideal for both of you. I can think of so many worse things than adding a glass display case of Batman memorabilia.

If the collection is large, some items can be changed out every month or year or two. Glassed-in storage is the way to go. A well-lit, custom-built display elevates whatever it showcases.

If they are boxed then you are doomed, they are hideous. If not then are they small enough to fit on picture ledges? You might be able be able to cover a wall in the hall with rows of picture ledges spaced tightly going almost to the floor and to the ceiling. A small ball of museum/earthquake putty would keep them in place and make it easy to dust. My hall is currently lined with these and holds the framed pieces that don't fit on the main walls of the house.

If the collection is a bit smaller then measuring the linear feet needed and dividing to get the number of shelves needed you'd be able to make up a shallow shelving unit to hold all of them. I did this with a collection of small tins. Very successful as the frame keeps it from looking chaotic and the unusually shallow depth means it can be hung just about anywhere.

Avoid bookcase depth cases as trying to arrange deeper than a single piece gets pretty horrible looking. Since he has many kinds of objects in this collection maybe having more than a single type of display would be best.

There's no way he has a complete collection so curating might make his collection more meaningful to him. I couldn't possibly have all the tins or other collections I had complete and editing to the best pieces made my collection better.

Not quite sure what kind and size of memorabilia your husband has, but I'm picturing a hallway with shallow ledges on one side filled with figures and small vehicles, with a glass or plexi over it (so you won't have to dust), and on the other side posters.

Or the same along a wall of the living room, or dining, or...anywhere but the bedroom. Well, maybe a couple of really good ones in the bedroom, but not the Joker, he's a mood-killer. And whatever you do, don't put the Joker in a baby's room. The Riddler or the Bookworm, maybe.

Does it HAVE to be in the bedroom? I built media (CD and DVD) shelves in a hallway. They are 6" deep, so don't significantly impact the hallway width - and I thought it was a pretty good use of space. This is not a main hallway - it is between the kids' bedrooms in the lower level of our split entry house.

Do some research about the value of the individual pieces. Then decide if he keeps the valuable ones and ditches the rest, or sells the valuable ones and picks over the rest for a manageable amount to display in a public area where his hobby can be shared with others. You don't want him dragging friends to the bedroom to admire the Batmen.

My seven year old grandson has grown out of super heros!

My friend who had collected all of these super heros and toys well until past the age of 60 is one of those guys who never grew up. He and his wife have only multiple cats, which is like having children that never grow up. He never accepted grown up responsibility for himself. Front and foremost with him was his intense desire to have toys and a mommy/wife. Fortunate for him that he married a woman who wanted to fill that role. It worked out beautifully for them.

Unlike some things that get collected, these toys and assorted items were produced in mass quantities.

You can find some manner of displaying them that will give them some legitimacy, but they are what they are. It seems that so many childrens toys now days are labeled as "collectible". Nonsense!

A lot of kids "collect" those toys that come in a surprise bag or some kind of "egg" where the kid has to keep buying multiple bags in order to finally get lucky enough to get the one that they don't have. What a marketing scheme! They don't even play with these things. They just collect them and they end up scattered under the bed and on the floor of the car like the useless objects that they are. This is not a new marketing scheme. It has been around for a long time. Remember "collect them all"?

Still, if a collection is to kept, unless it is kept to be displayed, it is useless. If it is to be kept because of projected future collecting value, it should be stored away where it won't get exposed. But, don't count on that future value.

I suppose that, if he is a grown man, he will have a say in what is or is not in the home he shares with his significant other. But, Batman is so very unsightly that one could understand just why his significant other would question it.

If he is young, he may still grow out of it! If he is older, he is set with it and you must love both him and Batman. Well, maybe not love Batman, but, at least let him give it a place in the home that you share.

I collect Christmas ornaments. I have no idea about value or size, but maybe you can create a batman themed tree? Bring them out once a year? I have donated and downsized over the years to the ones that give me joy, a fond memory... I get to feel and relive this joy every holiday as I unwrap and place on tree just an idea.

I like bpath's idea of a series of picture ledges along a hallway wall with a sheet of plexiglass screwed to the front edges so they don't get knocked off easily, and you don't have to dust. (though some dust may get in)

Even if his figurines are in boxes, you can display the box on the picture ledge. In fact, that may be the best way to deal with the boxed figurines--put them between waist level and just above head height. And use the higher and lower shelves for other stuff.

If you had tons of money, I'd suggest glass or plexi shelves for upper and lower areas, so you can see the stuff through the shelves. (also, if the shelves aren't very deep, then you can see the stuff too)
