It looks like you overwatered the plant, which could be the reason why the leaves are yellowed and shriveled in places. The use of the hairdryer (never a great idea) could have very easily burned the leaves and caused them to turn yellow. In your photos, I see some leaves are yellow at the base; these leaves are done for, I would cut them off and be done with it. They won't recover... If there are any leaves which are bright green and healthy, those will do just fine. Using a finger to test the soil is a very good way to measure the dryness/wetness level of the plant. You mentioned trying this and that the soil was only slightly damp. Another test is to pick up the whole pot. If it's extremely heavy you may have overwatered. (Conversely, if it's very light it will need some water ASAP!) Always be sure your plant can drain off excess water and that it never sits in water for a prolonged period of time. Checking the roots will help you assess the damage level of the root system. If it's stinky or mushy, it's rotting. cut away any roots that are brown and mushy. Roots that are yellow or white are healthy. I would suggest letting the plant dry out before watering again. Also I might add that the heater nearby could be drying out the plant prematurely, causing it to need more water more often. Be sure the window it is near is not too cold; this can cause yellowing of leaves too. Good luck!

The roots are growing quickly. They grew 1/4 inch in one day. When i went to repot it, I had it in my hand and just decided to put it straight into the potting soil. I was afraid if I planted it with the sphagnum around the base it would hold too much moisture around the stem and possibly cause rot later. I pulled it out to check on the roots today, and they look great :-) the growing tip has not shriveled or darkened. It is still a healthy bright yellow. Looks like it is a success!

you can just carefully put them in pots with potting mix. make sure to water them really well and then slowly ween them off so much water until you water them as much as any of your other plants. you might consider making them a plastic baggy tent, but it really shouldn't be necessary as long as you watch the watering.

Hello Nicole, It seems that your leaves are deprived of moisture content. The Sans tells you this by bending and cracking along the axis of its normally plumb and ever so slightly curved leaves. This could mean two things, or a combination of these two. The leaves are transpiring moisture to fast, or the roots are unable to absorb moisture from the soil. Your watering interval of once a month seems appropriate, even during summer. But still, leave vitality is decreasing and your Sans is struggling and even fighting back with some creative sky-roots. It seems to me there is an overlooked factor involved overhere. Your root system is healthy but your Sans is heavily under-watered. Not because you don't water enough, but because the roots are unable to absorb any moisture. And my best bet is that this is caused by your soil not uniformly absorbing any moisture at the root center at all. Your soil doesn't absorb water anymore. Also your clay pot provides an environment which sucks out any moisture content from the already (possibly) deprived soil. Do you know what the soil is made of? Peat is well known for locking out moisture eventually. Do you water with a cup from the top, or do you place the pot in a tub and let it soak for a few minutes? I would advise you to try this last option and give it a good soak. It will possibly reenable your soil to allow moisture. But before you do please make sure this is the culprit. Furthermore, I've started to notice this root behaviour from my thriving S. T. "Laurentii" also. It has thrown up healthy, thick and white 'sky-roots' all along its perimeter this summer. I will keep an eye on them to take note about how they develop. Since they are deprived of moisture in this self occupied room climate, it's expected that they die-off eventually. Maybe nice to know, an optimised technique for growing healthy root systems finds it roots in this occurrence. It's called air-pruning and modified containers are available to support this behaviour.
