Well...I have to say here that I once repaired a maple floor that went berzerk and presented me with a very disatisfied customer. I had to repair the thing or rip it out and rip out was not an option. I had to force an epoxy wood floor fill in those gaps, refinish the floor and then tell the customer that the humidity levels would have to be maintained at a constant level for as long as they owned the house. The fix worked. I did not, however, fill all the gaps...just the visually 'offensive' ones. I have wondered about filling all gaps in a solid wood floor with an epoxy compound, but as there is no fortelling what the consequences would be (I can think of some possible ones), I have never done that. The epoxy wood floor fill I used was by Abatron. There are others. Also, I once filled large gaps in a subfloor that someone wanted me to finish and I used Phenoseal brand acrylic caulking in a dark brown color to do that and coated with a waterborne acrylic hardwood floor finish...and that worked also. The caulk was flexible enough to expand and contract and remain in place. Might not work in your situation if the floor is allowed full reign to grow and shrink during seasonal changes. Solid wood paneling is a classic, very valuable and cannot be replaced. I'd do something to keep that. I agree that the original aesthetic of the wood was to add warmth with all the natural hard materials like stone, slate, iron, etc. Depends on how much of a purist you want to be with the aesthetic. The original design is flexible as to what colors and stains would work. You could paint too. The only real crime would be to tear out something that is as valuable as real wood paneling. It was even expensive back in the day when it was installed. It has value because it is high quality and beautiful. I would seek to do something that retains the pluses. If you want to maintain your house as an homage to the middle of the last century, then obviously "restore" rather than "redo." Oh, and just a ponder, is that two story fireplace material original? Or was it originally brick too? Love your house BTW! Very elegant.

Sledgehammer to the studs and start over. You accelerated that to Now. Not more paint. Never ever paint. If you had left it alone, it would have been far better. Vintage pink bathrooms are mega cool appealing. Were appealing. Its ruined now.
