Smaller Homes Design Dilemma Kitchens

Help..Need Work Area

We have a rental we recently purchased, however the kitchen is so small there's no counters to even prepare food on. The kitchen is only 10×12. The sketch I drew is rough and not scale, but to give an idea what I'm working with. I would appreciate any suggestions on how and where to add some kind of work area

Could you use something about 10 ft tall that looks like tiny sunflowers? I probably have some Jerusalem Artichoke/sunchokes in the old garden. They are good at "naturalizing" ie being invasive. They do look pretty cool and get really tall with nice flowers. You need an area that they can take over though...can we say extra hardy. I could send you a couple tubers, that is all you will need. Sounds like garden is a triangle so 3 nice cute signs 1 in center of each side of triangle(near walkways) saying something like "Please use the sidewalk! Garden project!" Need people to come up with cute sayings for the signs that get the point across & signs should be about 4 ft high so would be seen in winter. Paint some herbs on signs & garden hand tools, something to get the point across. Marigolds might be nice around edges or maybe snapdragons or something that doesn't get too full or shade the herbs too much as the border would "define" the garden. Some places out here have a narrow hedge about 18 in. tall & 12 in wide but it has to be constantly trimmed so that would not work. The 3 signs should be permanent & high enough so not covered with snow all the time. Steel pole & maybe sheet metal painted sign or something recycled as that would be even better needs to be sturdy. Might need to be cemented in. I think a little fence would be getting knocked over or bent or stepped on shoving it into the herbs & finishing them off. Too bad there isn't a place in back that could be fenced in. What kind of herbs are they,maybe 1 of them planted around edge. Jan

Hey debelli (as they say here in SC)! I am near Greer too! that is to say my address is Greer. We have a couple of acres, and we have been struggling with a garden for 3 years now. It is rewarding (that's why I'm on here - poking around looking for a stewed tomatoe recipe), but A LOT of hard work, and sometimes a lot of disapointment - bottom rot on the tomatoes this year has almost sent my poor DH over the edge! Would love to chat and help you out if we can. I grew up in the country with very old fashioned parents so we did a lot of gardening and canning...... yet I still kill about half of what I plant! Give me a shout if you're still on this board..... btw, looks like you've even got room for some chickens back there! now, I've got to get those tomatoes worked up.....

Kitchen remodel help needed: what layout works with few walls?

Working blind, not knowing what walls are loadbearing. Here are some pet peeves about the layout: 1) I hate the opening between dining room and kitchen, which sends through traffic by the sink and presumably DW; 2, hate the stairs coming down right in front of a wall; 3) most of the foyer to me is wasted and down the road I would try to reallocate most of it to the BR; and 4, Not fond of both a breakfast nook and dining room. What I would do: 1) Close current opening between dining room and kitchen to provide a large L-shaped area. 2) Create new opening at extreme left side of that existing wall. 3) Remove part of the wall between laundry area and breakfast nook. End the wall aligned with the stairs so they will be visible from breakfast nook and kitchen. 4) Move fridge (counter depth if possible) to the left of the sink. If space permits, steal a couple of feet from the breakfast nook but ensure there is room for a small table and chairs. 5) By moving the opening between the dining area and kitchen, and relocating the fridge, you now should have room for a decent sized island in the most popular kitchen shape: an L shaped island with a working (no seating) island. The island would be a great landing zone for the pantry and fridge. Given the structural changes, I would use a design-build firm that has a kitchen designer and a civil engineer or architect on board.

That doesn't look like it would be 10x12 unless the scale is totally off. I'm building an 8x9 kitchen on two walls and it has a lot of cabinets for just one or two people! My kitchen is also open to the living room like yours.

I'm happy to post my design if it would help, but it would be well short of 10x12.

I saw a youtube video where they had two ways of getting counter space in an extremely small kitchen area. One was where they had a huge cutting board that was stored vertically between the counters, and they took it out and placed it on top of the sink for counter space. In another video, they built a counter area in wood (horizontally) in between the counter top and the cabinet below. All a person had to do was putt it out when they needed counter space. Put in the youtube search box micro kitchen ideas. Also, look up tiny boat kitchens on youtube. Boats are well known to have very ingenious ways of dealing with tiny spaces, due to the fact that they usually have very tight areas to work with.

We are redoing our kitchen - it’s roughly 10x12. Cabinets are coming in tomorrow but here’s our layou. We were coming from a rental with literally a foot of counter space, and we both like to cook, so prep area was a big consideration.
