A farm sink made of granite??

You'd need a farm sink specifically to retrofit on your standard sink base. That will narrow down your options.

If you want to keep your sink base cabinet, you will need a short apron farm sink or do major renovations to your cabinet.

Kohler makes two of their sinks in a short apron as well as a tall apron style - the cast iron Whitehaven and the stainless steel Vault. Elkay also makes one - I think it is quartz.

If you have the budget, consider looking into some ways to increase the area between your sink and range. The new sink will take the same amount of space as the old one - if you get a short apron one the counter will slightly go over the edge so you might gain an inch.

It is unfortunate that with all the space in your kitchen that the original designer put the range and sink right next to each other. That could be changed. I have successfully stained newer cabinetry to match my oak. I realize this would mean messing with the whole window area which might not be worth it to you to add another foot of space - and / or possible move some appliances around.

You can have your sink base replaced or retrofitted. I found that to be more expensive then getting the shorter apron sink. I also like that I retained my space under the sink with larger doors. A tall apron farm sink will require shorter doors. Some get around this by doing a curtain. it is a very vintage look though and might not be what you would like.

I just installed a copper farmhouse sink and mine was quite expensive because I wanted it customized in a specific manner so I went with Havens.

However, in my research, it is possible to get a high quality copper sink for far less than $4000. You do have to be careful in terms of the specifications as there are indeed a lot of low quality copper sinks on the market at low price points.

However, they are all copper. The difference in quality is in terms of how they are constructed as a good copper sink will have a living finish versus a factory patina.

I have a Sinkology copper farmhouse sink and it is beautiful. Paid around $550.

After reading all the stories about the sink changing all the time, I was a little concerned, but with our normal use the sink has been fine. Yes you can pay more, but you don't need to.

You will LOVE using an apron sink! It will look pretty cool too. I just retrofitted w/ a SS apron sink. IN your kitchen, since there's no other copper....I'd consider a black granite apron or SS. JMO

Just to be clear, the mentions of “granite” farm sinks or apron front sinks are really about granite composite apron front sinks. Blanco and Elkay make them. They are quite nice but I don’t think the OP’s sink cabinet is wide enough. The smallest one requires a 36“ wide cabinet.

They’re pretty much the same, though a farmhouse sink or farm sink usually connotes that the sink material is fireclay, enameled cast iron, or soapstone - i.e. a material

that would be seen on a farm. An apron front sink can be made from fireclay, enameled cast iron, soapstone, stainless steel, copper, granite composite, or other materials.

The Google definition of farm house sink:

Ah...your sink base is rather small...I would guess it is only 30" w. Be mindful of this when considering sinks.

There is a difference between some types of apron front and farm sinks - besides what they are made of.

A traditional farm sink is styled on the butler sinks of Britain and Ireland and are like a big tub:

"Apron front" will include sinks like the Kohler Whitehaven which have an apron front, but are not made like the traditional butler sinks:

Installed, both types of sink look the same. The Kohler Whitehaven, Vault and some others have a self facing apron. This makes for an easier install because the cabinet does not need to be perfectly cut around the sink. An easier install can be less expensive, depending on the installer.

I originally was going to get a traditional butler type "farmhouse" sink. This was going to require I get a new farm sink base cabinet, stain it to match my other cabinets, and have someone replace the standard sink base for the farm sink sink base cabinet. The cost of that alone, without buying the sink was going to cost at least $600 - and that was with me doing the staining and finishing of the cabinet and did not include the cost of the sink. It ended up to be less expensive to get a short apron that could be installed right on my standard sink base cabinet.

The short apron sinks, in my opinion, have a bit more of the look of American vintage cast iron sinks and a little less the look of the butler sinks. The Ikea farm sink also has a shorter apron, but it is a butler type sink but is not as deep. I have not been impressed with the durability of the Ikea sink.

The apron on both sinks is a "tall apron" and you would need to do work on your sink base cabinet to make it work. Your doors would need to be shortened and the upper frame piece for the doors lowered.

This is an installation video for a short apron sink. You will have an installer, but this will help you see how the sink relates to your sink base cabinet. A tall apron will extend too far into the door area.

Also, both those sinks are double bowl - which is fine if you like that. Most are moving to single bowl or low divide bowl.

Don't forget you'll need a matching flange if you have a garbage disposal. I think your cabinet can be an impediment for a successful installation.

Thank you Beth! I actually saved that one to my favorites! It's more expensive but I know you get what you pay for with these and it's really not THAT bad. I'm just overwhelmed with the whole installation process. Ugh - who do I even call to come and help me measure, see if this sink will work with my cabinets, and install it? :( My granite counter guy?

And yes, I am one of those weird people that want a divided sink. I cook a lot. I like have a clean side and dirty side. And, if my dishwasher is running, I can rinse off a dirty dish, put it on the left side of the sink in the "hold pile" and still be able to drain my spaghetti on the right side when it is done! :)

jhmarie - thank you! Copper Sinks online has great quality sinks with not too crazy prices and I see they do have a short apron sink. It's not a double.. so we will see what happens here. It will be a nice backup option!

In my case, my installer put in my sink. He also measured for my new countertops. I did order the sink on my own - and that was scary, but I measured and my sink base cabinet was a standard 36" cabinet. Make sure you check the specifications when ordering - check the apron length and remember, the new sink will be under mount, so measure from the top of the wood portion of the cabinet, not the countertop.

Also, you might want to do a search of "copper sinks" on the Houzz search (copper sinks - advice) to read threads on the pros and cons of copper sinks. Some love the "living patina" and others do not.

The cabinet guy. you either need a cabinet that fits that sink, or he has to modify what you get. That Kohler Whitehaven will fit on regular cabinets. The fabricator will need the sink for fabrication of the countertop

If you're keeping that current sink base, then just measure that opening, or the size of your sink that's there now. also measure the inner dimensions so you'll know what size you're getting.

Gives a feeling of too much in not enough space. A 24" single would be more functional with added counter. In that space counter surface is more valuable, imo.

I have the Sinkology Addams sink which is 16 gauge and it is perfectly quiet. Amazon has the Rockwell for $599.

My new problem is that a standard 33" wide sink is too wide. :( Will start looking for smaller or I will have to do custom.

I tend to think that, although I really like apron front or farm sinks, in this crowded space it would be too much. I also agree that unless you are going to bring copper elements into the room elsewhere, a copper sink might just be a discordant note.

What color are you going to paint the walls, and what are you doing with the window?

Is the tumbled stone smooth and/or sealed? I believe that I have read complaints here about stone backsplashes being hard to keep clean.

Sinkology Bernini has a double sink that they sell at Home Depot that goes as small as 25". Also have a 30". Much more expensive but available.

Today, my granite guy came to help with my dilemma! A farmhouse/apron sink will not work without having one custom made and major work done to my cabinets. I really don't want to do that. Therefore - I am going with the hammered copper undermount sink from coppersinks online. Julie, that sink you ordered looks just like mine. I think you will be happy with it. It will darken with use. I use a scrubby brush and bar keepers friend to make it look new again. any lemon juice will make the copper look like a new penny (within a few days or so it tarnishes though). Use the wax stuff they send you if you want. every few weeks or so. it slows down the aging.
