We think you are on the right track, your design just needs some tweaking. Here are a few ways in which you can get the look you want. Get rid of the big chair by the window in exchange for something smaller, and put it next to the chair on the left. Change out the TV console for something longer and thinner. Then add some great artwork over the fireplace. Next add thicker window treatments to the windows, and get a longer coffee table. Perhaps when you get a coffee table and the TV console look for something in wood instead of black. Also we recommend taking down the four pictures above the TV. Instead you can hang two vertically on each side of the TV if you want to keep them. Note the set up below? We think this arrangement would work, except flip the chairs to the other side. I like your upholstered furniture as is. They are slightly different styles but all pulled together with the cream colour. If you start changing the colour on some of the pieces you run the risk of fracturing the current cohesiveness. The rug, I'm sorry, doesn't work. If this was my room, I'd replace rug with a large oriental rug with colour. Could be dark reds or golds or blues etc. Or all those colours! Then pick out a colour from the rug and hang drapery side panels on your windows, keep the shears. Your room looks a little sparse so I'd add a shallow sideboard beside the fireplace, a couple small tables for people to put drinks on. Then accessorize with art and decor. But I would definitely start by replacing the rug with a colourful rug and use that as your jumping off point. Because your room is currently all neutral, you can go in any direction with colour. Yep a to scale plan all measurements clearly marked is the only way to get help. Also a bit more info like is there a TV going in the space , how many seats do you need in the LR and the DR What is your style. That flooring is going to drive the bus so we need that marked to scale on your floor plan too.
