I started this thread several days ago, but I think it just now showed up.

Would like to know which of your roses haveimproved recently, or that you are hopeful they will.

I am really interested to see how Peggy Martin will do this year. It only gave me two weeks of bloom it’s first full year. It grew wonderful though and is a really pretty rose even now not in bloom. Just the perfect fountain shape for my fence. My other rose I hop will do well is Papi Delbard . I know it’s not fair to judge climbing roses when they are new as they like to climb first but I think I had 3 or 4 blooms all year but it’s made it’s sport known on my fence . It’s arching and reaching out already! This spring should be good ! Same for Ghislane de feligonde and crepuscule ..

oh I forgot , my molineux and boscobel could really use some help. Maybe move boscobel to more sun . And super fertilize molineux .. they were both underwhelming last year .

I cant remember last year who improved very much . I remember being pretty happy with most of them ! I do still have the shovel reserved for a couple .. lol ( pink eden , and kordes cosmos and le petit prince ) ( florintina if it doesn’t bloom )

My second year Pink Climbing Don Juan did spectacularly its second year, 2018, as it did its first year planted as a gallon from Chamblee's in spring, 2017. It's a continuous bloomer, unbelievable for a climber, and a young one, which climbers, as we know, are notoriously stingy with repeating, yet alone as a youngster.

My second remarkable rose is Petty Lady Rose. It was planted in spring of 2018 as a gallon, again, from Chamblee's, started growing and blooming immediately, and didn't look back. In my garden, and to my nose, it's scent is stronger than its parent Grand Dame, three year old in my garden. Pretty Lady Rose also repeated quicker than Grand Dame. I like them both, but that flower nodding Grand Dame does, that PLR doesn't do, is annoying me now that I have PLR.

Third to impress me is my first year Quick Silver, again a gallon from Chamblee's, planted in spring 2018, it grew 6-7' canes. Bloomed two flushes and didn't bloom again from July on. I hope this ls not a sign of things to come. On the bright side, the bloom is heavy petaled, relatively well scented, more than just moderate, and almost 5" across. The nicely formed bloom lasts a long time, too. Nevertheless , Quick Silver impressed me greatly, and it seemed to show no discernable black spot, although I do spray, but may not spray Quick Silver in the future.

Other new roses did very well, like: Purple Prince, Apricot Drift (a Lilyfinch inspired addition, and a great one. So much so, I have 9 more Apricot Drifts for the front of my rose bed which will be replacing the pretty, but wimpy, miniature and roses.), Dee-Lish, and Sister Emmanuelle, but not as shockingly good as Pink Climbing Don Juan, Pretty Lady Rose, and Quick Silver.

P.S. Sara- Ann, my Winter Magic (any success with yours?), and Jilly Jewel will stay, they are not typical wimpy minis. They're good growers and bloomers, both. My 5 minifloras, Deja Blu, I'm just itching to shovelprune, can't wait. They are poor growers, but strangely quick to repeat (figure that one?), weak necked, ugly open blooms, and time's up for them. Also, my 5 Sweet Arlenes, minifloras also, are going, too. DIamond Eyes, what a crisper, and wimp...gone too. I plan to keep the miniflora, Flawless, because it repeats fast, and the flowers are cast iron, but what a black spotter. Cafe Ole will stay for another year, doing good enough.

I’m anxious to see what your Peggy Martin does too. My Molineux looks like it died, and it was before bloom season ended, I don’t know what happened, it was looking pretty good, and I was excited about it.

Lily, did you get any bloom on your Florentina? I got nothing 2017 while in a pot and a very nice flush 2018 after getting her in the ground, but then zilch. I think the overhanging tree leafed out and she's not getting enough sun. I have her planted next to Phyllis Bide and I think I either have to severely prune the redbud or move them both. I'm voting for tree pruning. I really want them growing up my garage and it's a southern exposure.

Sorry about your molineux Sara Ann . I hate when plants die for no reason . I hope you find a deal on another .. or did you order it from David Austin ? They have a long warranty!!

Moses , I really need to try that pink Don Juan! It sounds wonderful. My fence for climbing roses is filled up pretty good but I’m sure it can be squeezed in somewhere.

Vapor : not a single bloom !! And it’s so thorny I’m afraid to let it keep growing. I want it out if it’s not going to bloom . I once nurtured a rose for 3 season with no blooms and I’m paranoid that’s happening again . For sure , you should prune those pesky trees !! Lol roses always come first :)

Moses, your Pink Don Juan sounds wonderful, I’m looking forward to seeing what mine does. I was thinking that Pretty Lady Rose and Grande Dame looked similar, my Grande Dame has improved, the stems are getting stronger.. Is your PLR fragrant? Quicksilver sounds like a great rose from everything I’ve read. My Winter Magic did good.

Vapor , mine came end of summer 2017 from high country roses . :) so one full season growing in a full sun spot .

I'm still not sure that that is enough to judge with this Rose. I had mine the entire growing season of 2017 and got nothing until spring 2018. It was worth the wait. It seems a lot of these Kordes need some time to get the roots they want to really pump out the blooms

Well maybe I’ll try to ignore it .. it grows so well and is so catchy when you are nearby ! lol. A thing that hurts it is my two lady in reds nearby , doing so well it makes me impatient. Just give me one blooms so I can see what this baby looks like and smells like ! :)

I will be interested to see if one of the two roses I have on fortuniana will make it through the winter and early spring transition period. The other one is in the basement, alive and leafed out again. I just hope I get a nice blooming period this year. Last spring we had 2 weeks of spring. It went from snowing and in the 30s in mid-April to the 80s and 90s in May. I am hoping that everything outside will make it even though I have just had a large tree limb crash onto the garden flattening all sorts of stuff because of the weight of the snow. There are tree limbs all over the area that are down, and another snowstorm and cold is due in for this weekend. There are people in the area that still had no power as of earlier today. Hopefully that situation will be resolved.

That is awful bustopher ... I hope you get out of this winter with no more damage. How terrible for folks !

Like Lilly, I’m interested in what Peggy will do. This will be it’s 3rd year. The first year it didn’t bloom at all. Last year it bloomed for the first two weeks of spring. I keep being told it had great repeats, but that hasn’t been the case yet for me.

I’m also interested in my (2) Eden. I patiently wait for the day one of them blooms. They were babies last year, so I don’t really to expect them to bloom this year, but if I can get just one little bloom I will be soooooo excited.

My red Don Juan that I planted last spring is about 6-7ft long now and is still blooming nonstop.

I agree with Moses on Purple Prince being my surprise rose of the season. It was the smallest twig and it just took off and bloomed like crazy.

Young Lycidas is a blooming machine and the color is delicious

I am so impressed with this rose.

My PMs are still in pots, but they have bloomed multiple times. However, they seem to need feeding to do that, otherwise it's just healthy green growth. We'll see how they do when I get them in the ground this year. I am happy for healthy foliage, so it they give me a few flushes, I'll be thrilled. Where are you guys buying the Purple Prince and Young Lycidas?

I didn't do a good job on my roses last season but they still did pretty darn good considering. That being said here are the ones that REALLY stood out.

Ring of Fire was new in the garden last season. It grew and bloomed like wild fire.

The Prince is grafted onto fortuniana root stock. 2nd year and just doing great

Brinessa has never disappointed. Just keeps on growing and blooming.

LD Braithwaite never slows down.

Both Rosa Rugoa and it white partner Rosa Rugosa Alba are without a doubt the easiest care roses in my garden.

The mini Glowing Amber did really well last year.

Compt de Chambroud went crazy in the spring and never slowed down.
