I'd consider removing the valance and installing blackout curtains, outside mount, over the shade. I think curtains on rings are very very very easy to draw open or closed! DK if this makes any difference, but my kids were very very very early risers around that age...like 4:30/5am. Didn't matter how dark it was in their room LOL! Edit -- I just wanted to add that I really love the window arrangement in that room, it will be fun to see how it turns out when you are finished!

My grandsons did their homework at the kitchen island, and I sat at the island, too, and read or helped if asked. I would have loved to have had a more comfortable chair than that island stool! I wouldn't put the table against the wall unless you are expecting that they will be using a computer, which must have access to a plug. As my grandsons got older (up to age 11), they used their iPads. At 6th grade, one stayed at the island and the elder took over a "project room" that was in the basement garage, and called it his "office". He used it until the went to college this fall. He painted it, bought his own desk at Office Depot and a chair from Ikea, and also installed a hammock for when he had reading to do. It kills me to see that room empty now...

Your carpet is very neutral and about the same color as hardwood floors would be. Just consider the floor background and ignore - your vibrant furnishings will be the eye catchers. IMO you can't block that balcony door since that is the only other egress from that space . But maybe the door can have the swing reversed. That leaves the side walls for a bed so a twin with storage under it and a really good organizing of that closet for clothes that need to be in there all the rest in the storage drawers. I think if renovating is in the future that balcony could sure be more useable as bedroom , shame on the architect that designed this upper floor. IMO the smallest bedroom really is 10x10 . Maybe some shelves along the left wall for some decor too. I think you will need to trust her to be careful and make the balcony a cute place for her to sit and read or play , at 9 she should have good sense and the fact she is a girl instead of a gutsy boy is a bonus.
