Can alkaline soil make your tomatoes taste BLAND?
Comments (22)We've got very alkaline soil here (almost off the colour chart with those home kits), to the point where we actually have alkali flats spotted here and there around the countryside. This is the first year we've tried sulphering the garden and doing better with the spring ammendments. This is the most productive garden I think we've ever had! In my experience, no... alkaline soils most definitely do not contribute bland tomatoes. I'm not a lover of sweet toms; I like that super-zingy tomato flavour that starts hurting your tongue if you eat too many. The years where we've just been too busy and I haven't ammended (or had time to weed) the soil at all, we've had to burrow under weeds to find the tomatoes. While the plants and fruit were definitely smaller, the flavour... WOW! This year, we've been good with the water and ammendments, the plants are big and lush and the tomatoes are huge and plentiful, BUT I'm finding that my favourites are certainly not as zingy as in past years. I'm going to have to find a balance between flavour and production....See MorePotato soup bland.
Comments (62)Jimster, now you've stepped over the line. Remember, I'm Native American, but the other part is Irish. Let's have a bit of respect for my humble potato! Potatoes are not the cause of obesity, it's the stuff you put on them, the gravy, the sour cream, the butter. An average potato has 45% of the daily value for vitamin C, 620 mg potassium, comparable to bananas, spinach and broccoli, trace amounts of thiamin, riboflavin, folate, magnesium, phosphorous, iron and zinc and all for only 110 calories and no fat. And potatoes with the skin on are an excellent source of fiber. In fact, with 2 grams of fiber per serving, a potato equals or exceeds that of many "whole" grain products-whole grain bread, whole wheat pasta and many cereals. Can you tell I love potatoes? (grin) Elery's potato soup is much like Teresa's, with no milk or cream. The potato soup I grew up with was made with items easily grown or produced on the farm, which would be an onion, sauteed in butter, potatoes simmered in a little broth and then mashed and milk added until it was "soup". Salt and pepper to taste. I do agree that our main source of salt is processed food items like canned soup, frozen dinners and specialty meats. Cooking from scratch makes it much easier to control our sodium intake. My Dad was one of those people who salted everything and no amount of salt was too much. I seldom eat processed foods and never salt things like fruit and I always cook potatoes and pasta without salting the water, it used to drive my ex-MIL crazy so I kept doing it. Now I've been on blood pressure meds for several months. Salt doesn't seem to make a difference up or down in my blood pressure and I sure didn't develop high blood pressure because of my salt intake! Annie...See MoreWanna buy a Blandings Dream House?
Comments (12)Watching it now! The plans at the beginning, the couple go at it like a couple of GWers over in Building a Home! Love the scene of explaining the paint colors to the decorator. But she changed her mind about the foyer wallpaper between this scene and the end; I wonder what color ceiling she ended up with? Funny how they wanted extra bathrooms, and Muriel and Jim still end up bobbing around each other in the bathroom. Funny response to the suggestion of saving a significant amount of money by letting the two girls share a bath: "I refuse to endanger the health of my daughters in a house with less than 4 bathrooms." The shutters are interesting: sized right, with hinges and dogs. But, the louvers are pointing up. This would make sense of they actually closed them during the rainstorm, but they didn't. Probably the rain ran down behind the louvers, and will eventually rot them. (And the next morning, Cary Grant strides across the lawn, which should be a sodden mess?) i wish there were more interior shots, especially of the little flower sink and the kitchen. What a pretty exterior! edit to add: and now I have to read the book. It's illustrated by Wm.Steig, who wrote Shrek lol!...See MoreBland 90s House Needs Help!
Comments (13)Lovely home. Please don't paint the brick. The brick is attractive and goes well with the roof color. I would begin with painting the garage door the color of the siding and trim. If you are planning to repaint the siding, consider a shade a bit darker, and paint the shutters the color of the roof. I would remove the semicircular trim on the porch posts, replace the turned posts with 6-inch (or larger) square posts, and either remove the porch railing and spindles or replace them with square rails and spindles. Then I would add landscaping....See MoreJ Williams
