Park Hills Kitchen Layout Help - cannot line up zones
Comments (5)2) L-Shape with existing footprint This layout is preferable because I can get a longer run on the North wall, but there is a shorter run on the west wall. The first option keeps the opening into the family room as big as possible - I also love that the cook surface is as far as possible from the dining room. The second option addresses the workzone issue, but the d/w is on the left of the sink and I take up more of the wall into the family room. D/W on the left seems like it would be awkward. (Side note, the slider to the deck is at the North end of the family room - I'm hoping to keep the path to deck shorter - thus the entrance into the family room is moving North. I will have a couch along the south end of that wall so I need to have about 110" of coverage.)...See MoreKitchen Layout: Do-over? Small Kitchen with zones?
Comments (30)I'm no expert but I think only a tiny bar size sink can fit into that corner and I'm not sure how comfortable it would be to use that sink right next to the ovens. Maybe you can have a sink next to the cooktop and prep b/w the sink and the corner and use the corner to spread out. Although it's not ideal, it can work. In our summer house, my single sink is very close to the cooktop and I prep on the other side. Oh, I think I forgot to mention deedle's corner solution. I'm not sure if it can be convenient for the corner next to the ovens, but I believe it can be doable for the corner next to the main sink....See MoreKitchen Layout - work triangle - help
Comments (23)I'd use Cpartist sketch this way: Refrigerator where the oven is, near dining and near pantry door. Keep cleanup area / main sink at exterior wall, just the way you had it (which is the "natural" location Stove where sink is, at refrigerator wall. You will have the triangle considering that the prep area is at the island and you have a sink there. I do know that the stove, the way cpartist placed it, will look great... but I could not stand the sink at a wall. Below is why I will respectfully disagree with Naf_Naf and also the OP's original kitchen idea. The Red arrows is taking food out of the fridge and bringing it to the prep sink to rinse and prepare. The Blue arrow is taking it from the sink to the prep space. The Green arrow is taking it from the prep space to the cooktop. The yellow arrow is taking dirty plates from the table to the cleanup area. OP's idea: Positives: Prep sink is right across from cooktop. Oven is near stove and prep sink Negatives: Very little prep space unless you want to prep over the dishwasher, which might mean opening and closing the dishwasher and moving out of the way multiple times. Cleanup sink is far from table. Fridge if far from prep sink and island is a barrier between fridge and prep sink. Naf_Naf's idea: Positives: Clean up sink is in window area Fridge is on corner of kitchen so close to dining area Good secondary prep zone between cleanup sink and cooktop. Negatives: Fridge is awkward to prep sink and island acts as a barrier to prep sink. Very little prep space unless you want to prep over the dishwasher, which might mean opening and closing the dishwasher and moving out of the way multiple times. Crossing zones to get from prep area to cooktop. Cleanup sink is far from table. Cpartist's idea: Positives: Fridge is near prep sink. Prep sink is near cooktop. Table is direct path to cleanup sink. Good secondary prep zone between cleanup sink and cooktop. Negatives: Very little prep space unless you want to prep over the dishwasher, which might mean opening and closing the dishwasher and moving out of the way multiple times I didn't do Mama's idea because it would basically work the same way as my idea. In all cases I would find a way to either eliminate the dishwasher on the island or figure out a way to switch it so you can prep and have the dishwasher open without having to get out of the way....See MoreNew Kitchen Layout in the Works - Help me perfect it, please!
Comments (32)I understand you are looking for functionality feedback, but if you are at all desirous of having a bright and cheery kitchen you really might want to rethink your plan. You have not one single window in the kitchen and even though the dining room has floor to ceiling windows, that light/sun will not penetrate deep enough to be of real value because of the roof on your outdoor living area. And if the back of the house faces north, I promise you it will be very dark in your kitchen. You will need artificial light any time you are washing dishes or cooking etc. As far as function goes, I would want my stove much closer to my sink, so I would put the stove on the fridge wall and the fridge on the stove wall. As far as the negative comments regarding sitting at an island counter on stools....I absolutely LOVE my large kitchen island and we sit there ALL the time (on stools). We eat there, read there and do all sorts of work sitting at the island. We also have a large dining/breakfast area (16 x 16) surrounded by 12 windows and a nice window seat, but for our casual eating, the island gets the most use. Bottom line for me personally though is that I wouldn’t even consider a kitchen without windows.....too dark. But maybe bright and sunny is not a priority for you. We lived in a rental while our home was under construction and it was laid out in such a way that there were no windows in the kitchen and the attached family room (which faced north), even though it had large windows, afforded no appreciable light. It was always dark and dreary even on a sunny day....See MoreFlo Mangan
