I would love to have a round d/r table. We've now entertained for 25 years on the rectangular table we purchased before we actually entertained! I usually do most of the holidays, and I curse it at each occasion:))). More so after I saw a beautiful round d/r table in an antique shop in New Orleans in the late 90's. I would have purchased it, but DH doesn't think our room could have supported the size of the table we saw. That particular table seated 12. No leaves. The round is just beautiful. Like the link posted, it is more functional all around. The seating at a round table makes for easier conversation, you aren't yelling down to the other end of the loonnnggg table. Also, IMO, round is much more interesting decoratively speaking. Post a pic if you do decide on the round, I'd love to see what you have chosen.

Thanks for the photo's. I am putting in a banquette too. I never even thought of using one, but a kitchen designer talked me into it. My wall is 9 ft. long - I don't want the banquette that long so I think I will put seating ends on it. I will have windows behind it and small windows on the sides. I may not even use a table with it, since I will have an island that seats 3-4 and I'm a "family of 1"... After I made my decision to put one in, I was suprised how many of the kitchen magazines are showing them now. So I'm glad I was "talked into it".

When you prewire, make sure they don't cut through the ceiling. Instead have them just leave the wiring in the attic or ceiling space. Our *helpful* electricians put it through the ceiling in what was apparently a random location, and of course, it had to be moved. DD had hers prewired, and the wiring was left accessible, but they didn't cut the hole in the DR ceiling, so easily brought down in the correct location later and passed inspection that way. I guess I should have been more specific when telling the builder, but learned the hard way.

Keep the rectangle. It looks nice. A round table for six is really big and if you try to do any other work on it - like using it as a temporary desk or crafting area, it is hard to "spread out" on a round table. Also, a round table big enough for six makes it hard for guests to reach the serving dishes in the middle. Is there room behind the sofa to use the console like a sofa table. You could keep some art on the wall , but move the table closer. Although, I don't think it looks crowded. Maybe just pushing things around a bit to tweak the distances and relocating smaller items. Is there room to rotate the dining table so it is parallel with the console? One more thought, place mats and table runners are much easier to use on a rectangular table. Nice condo.
