Elephant Hearts Soften and Fall off Early!!! WHY?
Comments (3)bf: Yes, I have had similar experiences, just this yr in fact. Mine stems from too much water. All the symtoms are exactly like mine. Big beautiful fruit that softens and matures early. The fruit are extra juicy and less sweet than usual. I cut the water off for three weeks and the later plums have been much better, many even spectacular. The same thing can happen in other stone fruit. A mild to moderate water stress gives me best fruit. I want some vegetative growth all summer but not the rampant growth you may get in spring. Symtoms of too much water stress in plums and pluots are off flavors, perhaps less sweet and less crisp fruit. In nectarines too much stress causes thick, tough skin and maybe cracks mostly on the tip end of the fruit. There can be off flavors. Nectarines with proper water levels tend to have stippling on the tips but no cracks or thick tough skin. How much have you been watering this spring and summer? Comments (35)Trailrunner, your home is just so beautiful and it seems to be full of who you are as a person. I don't know your story but I too have one of my own. The sentence that began "All any of us can do" really spoke to me today and I don't even know what words I can say to thank you for them. I don't mean for this to be an OT not by any means, but I try to surround myself with things that are attractive to me. The beauty might be in the character of your unupholstered chair or the unknown history of memazz's bowling pins or a painting that tells a story to me. My family doesn't understand the importance decorating has in my life, and luckily doesn't really have any influence on what I do - I couldn't imagine that battle. For me, it is the desire to surround myself with things that I find beautiful and items that evoke happy memories that dictates what I do. My rooms would not be in any magazine and pale in comparison to rooms I have seen in this blog (like your dining room) but adding something or altering a room bringing it closer to being "me" is what I strive for. Sitting in a chair in my LR, with my coffee, watching the cat as she sleeps next to "my" chair - no one else likes the color but I think it is "gorgeous" - with the colors of the vase (which I picked out just knowing that it would cast the most magnificent shadow) in the window beginning to creep upon her fur is more beautiful than any diamond I could own. So again, without meaning for this to be OT - I tend to look at people's rooms as more than what is "correct" as to how much of their personality is there. So many of your pieces from the stories you have told seem to tell some of the stories of your life. Do you like I, place what may be to most people, a greater desire to surround yourself with things that elicit positive thoughts. I find that not many people understand that it is more than just accumulating or matching "things". Comments (10)White washing a wood (pine) that has TREMENDOUS amounts of tannin (the colours that make wood the colour of wood) in it can lead to a floor that loves to turn PINK. Heart wood pine is extremely valuable. It is rare...and it is expensive. Especially if it is wide plank. We will need a photo of the floor, and not the banister. I personally would look to a white table rather than changing the colour of the flooring. If you want to cool down the flooring, you might want to look at changing to a water based finish rather than an oil based finish. The ORANGE comes from the oil or solvent based polyurethanes. These cheaper oil based products (the things that stink up a house for 30+ days and cause migraines) naturally turn orange. If you coat a piece of white paper with them, it turns the paper orange. We call this 'ambering'. Before you look at white washing, please look at using a water based polyurethane from Bona or Loba. These finishes are clear and COLOURLESS. That is to say, the colour of the RAW WOOD will be maintained. They will NOT turn orange. It is possible that this is all you are looking for. A classic Scandinavian Modern home has natural wood toned floors and white walls with plenty of glass and chrome. The furniture is then used to add colour. The Scandinavian wood is often finished in the water based finishes simply because it is illegal to use the oil based finishes in Europe. Indoor air quality is heavily regulated in Europe...which means most of the N. American products are impossible to buy over there. Go ahead and find some 'raw' wood used for your floors. See how you like that colour. A water based finish WILL keep that colour. I would prefer that over a pink floor....See Moredan1888
